Trainee-Administrative Internship-Institute for Health Equity Research-Emergency Medicine-Icahn School of Medicine-Full Time-Days

Job Summary:

Interns will play a pivotal role in the administrative internship at the Institute for Health Equity 
Research (IHER). This year, our emphasis is on the innovative use of Large Language Models 
(LLMs) to identify and address racial bias and stigmatization in healthcare documentation. Interns 
will be at the forefront of developing and/or adapting cutting-edge large language models to 
improve the language used within Electronic Health Records (EHRs). 

Administrative Internship participants are expected to participate in all ODI-sponsored activities, 
including educational sessions and panels, engagement events, and the Awards & Recognition
Ceremony at the end of the summer. 

Project

Factual, Affirming, Informative, Respectful (FAIR) Documentation - A proactive 
approach to eradicating racial bias and stigmatizing language in clinical documentation. 

Key Responsibilities:
● Interns will play a crucial role in curating high-quality datasets by meticulously 
conducting manual reviews. This process is integral to the development of robust 
corpora that will serve as foundational training and validation sets for our machine 
learning model extractions.
         ○ Work with John Snow Labs' healthcare-specific large language models to 
analyze provider notes within the health system's EHR.
● Help develop and implement pipelines to identify, categorize, and suggest alternatives 
to biased and stigmatizing language.
● Conduct validation studies by comparing LLM results with manual reviews of a 
randomized set of patient charts.
● Actively participate in ODI educational sessions, panels, engagement events, and the 
end-of-summer Awards & Recognition Ceremony.

Eligibility

• Current enrollment in a graduate or doctoral program, with an interest in pursuing a career 
in healthcare and in particular, the AI/ML field. 
• Must be a U.S. citizen or have a permanent resident card or VISA.
Skills and Qualifications
• Attention to detail with strong organizational skills
• Moderate proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
• Strong verbal and written communication skills
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively, with effective prioritization.
• Familiarity with large language models, Jupyter Notebook, as well as basic coding 
languages - specifically python, SQL.

PLEASE NOTE: This internship will be on a hybrid schedule which means the intern will be 
required to work onsite and in-person (at one of our Manhattan locations) at least two to three 
times a week.

Compensation Statement

The Mount Sinai Health System (MSHS) provides a salary range to comply with the New York City Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for this role is $16.00 - $30.00 Hourly. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, education, and hospital need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
