Summary

Supplier Quality Engineer (FAI) is responsible for ensuring the quality and compliance of manufactured products through the thorough review and approval of First Article Inspection Reports (FAIRs) submitted by suppliers. This role is critical in verifying that the initial production samples meet all specified requirements, including engineering drawings, specifications, and customer expectations. The engineer will work closely with suppliers, internal engineering, manufacturing, and quality teams to ensure robust product quality from the outset. This position requires a strong understanding of quality principles, manufacturing processes, and the AS9102 standard (or similar industry-specific FAIR standards).

Detailed Description

Performs tasks such as, but not limited to, the following:

  • Conduct detailed reviews of FAIR packages (AS9102 or customer-specific requirements) submitted by suppliers and/or internal manufacturing.
  • Verify that all elements of the FAIR are complete, accurate, and compliant with engineering drawings, specifications, purchase orders, and other relevant documentation.
  • Ensure that all dimensional results, material certifications, process certifications, and functional test data meet the specified requirements.
  • Identify and document any discrepancies, non-conformances, or incomplete information within the FAIR.
  • Approve or reject FAIR submissions based on the thoroughness and accuracy of the documentation and the conformity of the first article.
  • Communicate FAIR approval status and any required corrective actions to suppliers and internal teams.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on FAIR requirements (e.g., AS9102) and their application.
  • Provide guidance and support to suppliers and on the preparation and submission of accurate and complete FAIR packages.
  • Interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and quality standards to ensure proper FAI execution.
  • Stay up-to-date on changes to industry standards and customer-specific FAIR requirements.

Knowledge/Skills/Competencies

  • Knowledge of quality tools, ISO and IPC standards and processes
  • Hands-on experience with the AS9102 standard (or similar FAIR standards like PPAP Level 3) is essential, particularly within the aerospace (for Honeywell) or electronics manufacturing (for Celestica) industries.
  • Experience interpreting engineering drawings (including GD&T - Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing), specifications, and quality standards.
  • Familiarity with manufacturing processes and quality control methodologies.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with a wide variety of internal and external customers
  • Excellent attention to detail and analytical skills.
  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), SAP, NetInspect.
  • Excellent communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize effectively.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

Physical Demands

  • Repetitive manual movements (e.g., keyboarding)
  • Sustained visual concentration on small areas, such as monitors, screens
  • Sustained visual concentration on numbers, legal documents
  • The job works in a normal office environment with no undue exposure to noise, odours, dust, drafts, etc.

Typical Experience

  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in a quality engineering role, with a significant focus on First Article Inspection (FAI).

Typical Education

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Aerospace or Materials) ASQ Certified Quality Technician (CQT), Certified Quality Engineer (CQE), or other relevant certifications is an asset.
