About the role

Requisition Id 13066

Overview:

Oak Ridge National Laboratory is seeking outstanding candidates for the position of Director of the Computational Science and Engineering Division. The CSE Director reports to the Associate Laboratory Director (ALD) for Computing and Computational Sciences and is responsible for the organization’s technical leadership, operation and management. In concert with the CSE Division staff and with broad national and international collaboration, the successful candidate will create and execute an imaginative and far-sighted research program that will define long-term directions for high-end computing for the laboratory and the nation.

The Computational Sciences and Engineering Division is a major research division at the Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory. CSED is internationally recognized as a premier research organization and is focused on transdisciplinary computational science and analytics at scale for scientific discovery. The division prioritizes science with impact for the nation that connects multiple scales, tools, libraries, and science disciplines, leveraging our strong domain diversity, our expertise with DOE facilities, and experience fusing divergent algorithms, models, and data. It focuses on the transition of isolated science and engineering successes within domains and computational paradigms to larger scales in all dimensions, fully utilizing leadership computing and other computing assets. It also advances quantum computing, software, algorithms, sensing, and networking, and communications to deliver bold scientific insights across a range of DOE relevant applications.

Over the past decade, ORNL has established a record for deploying the world’s largest and most powerful computing systems and this emphasis on extreme scale systems is expected to continue into the foreseeable future. Sustaining this capability requires a deep integration of research programs spanning computational approaches to science and engineering, applied mathematics, and computer science with a world class scientific user facility program that is capable of deploying and ensuring the effective utilization of these systems. The new CSED director will be encouraged to grow the division’s research portfolio to support the laboratory’s goals in energy-efficient computing, in collaboration with the other divisions in the Computing and Computational Sciences Directorate (CCSD) at ORNL: NCCS (National Center for Computational Sciences) which is responsible for maintaining the user facility and CSM (Computer Science and Mathematics) which is responsible for maintaining research programs in computer science and applied mathematics.
