Drainage Project Engineer

The Drainage Project Engineer’s role is to oversee the development of engineering analysis and designs. The Drainage Project Engineer is responsible for the technical development of stormwater analysis and design projects. They independently apply standard engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria to moderately complex projects. The Drainage Project Engineer is expected to provide technical guidance, oversight, and mentoring of Drainage Engineers.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Apply principles, methods, and techniques of civil engineering for the design of stormwater systems and bridges/culverts for Phase I and Phase II roadway and other infrastructure designs.
- Collaborate as an integral member of an interdisciplinary project team, proactively coordinating design development with supervisor, other departments/disciplines, subconsultants, and clients.
- Evaluate existing site conditions from resources including topographic survey, historical plans, Flood Insurance Studies, stormwater models, geotechnical field data, and site visits.
- Complete roadway drainage design plans, specifications, and related documents at the direction of their manager.
- Perform hydrologic and hydraulic calculations and scour analyses for the accurate design of project features.
- Complete reports and permitting applications for approval, including writing narratives, overseeing exhibit preparation, compiling documents and calculations, and responding to review comments. Typical reports include Concept Drainage Reports, Hydraulic Reports, and Location Drainage Studies. Typical permitting applications include local agency stormwater and IDNR-OWR floodway construction permits.
- Document work progress in writing, drawings, calculations, or tabulations for quality assurance. Review work such as hydrologic and hydraulic input parameters, model setup and results, stormwater infrastructure layouts, quantities, and cost estimations performed by other staff for completion of the department QA/QC process.
- Assist in the preparation of proposals for future work.
- Assist in controlling project costs by managing milestone timeliness, budget, and reporting of projects, for both internal and client needs.
- Assist in project coordination with clients, review agencies, contractors, or others directly involved with the project, assisting with problem solving between relevant parties and site activities.
- Assist in managing sub-consultants engaged in support of design projects.
- Coordinate with utility companies to determine if relocations are necessary with regards to the project design.
- Rely on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.
- Utilize value engineering, technical input, and contributions from others throughout the design process.
- Continually develop personal knowledge of engineering and construction best practices and standards by leveraging job experience. Undertake research related to new methods or materials for use in projects.
- Contribute to team success by providing mentoring, guidance, and technical insight to Drainage Engineers.
- Expand existing professional connections by attending networking events and fostering new relationships that can contribute to business development opportunities and potential talent identification.
