Job Summary
The Roy Howard Community Journalism Center (RHCJC) is seeking motivated college students for a paid Multimedia Journalism Internship. This hands-on opportunity provides real-world experience in reporting, photography, videography, digital storytelling, social media, and audience engagement while serving communities across Southeast Mississippi.

Interns will work alongside professional journalists to create impactful multimedia content, support community engagement initiatives, and gain practical newsroom experience in a collaborative environment.

This internship is open to students currently enrolled at colleges and universities outside the University of Southern Mississippi who are interested in journalism, communication, media production, photography, videography, digital media, strategic communication, marketing, public relations, or related fields.

Internship opportunities are available at our Hattiesburg, Long Beach, and Jackson locations.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Research, report, write, photograph, and/or produce multimedia stories that inform and engage local communities.
  2. Capture and edit photography and video content for digital, broadcast, and social media platforms.
  3. Create digital content for websites, newsletters, social media, and other audience engagement initiatives.
  4. Assist with social media content creation, scheduling, audience interaction, and performance monitoring.
  5. Conduct interviews and gather information from community members, local leaders, and subject matter experts.
  6. Collaborate with RHCJC staff, student employees, and other interns on multimedia storytelling projects.
  7. Support community engagement events, media literacy programs, town halls, and other public outreach initiatives.
  8. Adhere to professional journalism standards, including accuracy, fairness, ethical reporting, fact-checking, and verification.
  9. Participate in editorial meetings, planning sessions, and professional development opportunities.
  10. Represent the Roy Howard Community Journalism Center professionally during field assignments, community events, and partner activities.
  11. Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
Currently enrolled at a college or university other than the University of Southern Mississippi pursuing a degree in journalism, communication, digital media, public relations, marketing, media production, or a related field.
Strong interest in multimedia storytelling, community journalism, digital content creation, or audience engagement.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within a team environment.
