This Senior Electrical Engineer position is in Regulated & Renewable Energy (RRE).  RRE has multiple regional/organizational breakouts to serve our customers by generating safe, reliable, and cleaner energy at a competitive price.  This position is in Carolinas Dispatchable Generation's (CDG) Regional Services.  The CDG Regional Services - Electrical & Controls Team has the responsibility for providing regional technical support to operating power generation stations in North and South Carolina.

The expectations of the regional engineering role are to provide electrical support to the Stations staff and regional project implementation teams. Duties will include support for project initiation and implementation, developing strategies for electrical component maintenance and life cycle management, and providing emergent technical support for electrical issues for station power systems.

This position will have primary responsibility for supporting HF Lee, Wayne Co, Mayo, and Roxboro Stations, and it is expected that this engineer will spend most of their onsite time for this hybrid role at those locations, Raleigh, or Charlotte.  Occasional support and travel to other Stations in the Fleet will be required.

This position is for the Senior Engineer level of the engineering classification hierarchy.  Employees at this level manage work in engineering areas of specialization, with minimal supervision.  Incumbents are expected to develop advanced skills and to have the ability to work independently, with guidance limited to unusual or complex projects or issues. They are fully competent in use of concepts and procedures. They identify problems, develop solutions and take actions to resolve.

Responsibilities

  • Function as a technical resource for Carolinas Dispatchable Generation Stations
  • Serve as Engineer of Record for Electrical Systems and Equipment
  • Provide technical support for Equipment Inspection, Testing, and Troubleshooting
  • Provide technical support for Project Implementation teams.
  • Participate in field inspections and testing activities at appropriate frequencies to enhance construction, commissioning, and operational support of Station projects.
  • Drive consistency and share best practices across the operating fleet by utilizing Technical Standards (i.e. procedures, design criteria, specifications, equipment standards, vendor lists, technical lessons learned, etc.). Provide input to these documents to reflect lessons learned, standardization, and changes to industry practice.
  • Establish technical requirements for conducting reviews and gaining acceptance of design modifications of control systems and equipment
  • Drive the equipment reliability process by assessing equipment condition, health and developing long-term equipment strategies to optimize generating unit reliability
  • Offer ideas and suggestions to reduce costs while maintaining overall quality of the engineered solutions, including constructability and ease of operability and maintenance
  • Provide secondary technical support for generating station staff for equipment failures, malfunctions, and abnormal conditions
  • Serve as technical liaison between power generating fleet and Subject Matter Experts within Duke Energy for highly complex issues
  • Perform electrical engineering activities including preparation of thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations and sketches related to defined problems and analysis for assigned responsibilities.
  • Maintain relationships with plants, outside consulting engineering firms, maintenance shops, and equipment manufacturers.
  • Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities.
  • Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills. Maintains accurate records and files.
  • Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally.

Required/Basic Qualifications

  • Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited program or state registration as a Professional Engineer. A Master's degree in electrical engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. electrical engineering degree.
  • Minimum of 6 years of electrical engineering experience or 5 years of electrical engineering experience with state registration as a Profession
