About the role

As a member of the Grants Team in the School of Medicine Office of Research Administration (ORA), we are seeking a Sr. Grants Associate who will be responsible for review, problem resolution and institutional approval/signature authority for grant and incoming subgrant applications and awards. Reporting to the Associate Director of Grants, the ideal candidate will be a self-motivated, organized, team-oriented person with strong analytical skills, good judgment, attention to detail and the ability to excel in a fast-paced, deadline-driven work environment. This central office research administration position is remote and has no financial responsibilities.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

    • Review, negotiate and accept grant and incoming subgrant awards and agreements on behalf of the University.
    • Work with compliance offices, Johns Hopkins Technology Ventures, the Office of General Counsel and sponsors to resolve any conflicts regarding award terms and conditions.

    • Process federal Just-In-Time requests, sponsor prior approval requests and administrative updates, such as relinquishments, carryover, effort reductions, etc.

    • Remain informed and up-to-date with events, regulations and changes that affect sponsored projects.

    • Advise SOM research community on sponsored projects issues, such as proposal preparation and post-award compliance.

    • Work collaboratively and maintain positive and productive relationships with faculty, staff, students and sponsor contacts.

    • Submit account setup requests for new awards or award updates.

    • Arrange and conduct trainings for the SOM research community.

    • Represent ORA at national and regional research administration meetings.


    Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

    • Demonstrated understanding of research administration best practices.
    • Must be able to manage competing priorities with multiple, sometimes tight, deadlines.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Adobe Acrobat and various institutional, federal and non-federal electronic proposal submission and award management systems: Era Commons, Grants.gov, ASSIST, Proposal CENTRAL, Fastlane/Research.gov, etc.
    • Familiarity with federal agency policies, regulations, application requirements and their application to sponsored research.
    • Excellent oral, verbal and written communication skills.


    Minimum Qualifications
    • Bachelor's Degree required.
    • Three years related experience with grant proposal preparation and submission, sponsored research financial administration, grant award negotiation and/or regulatory compliance in a sponsored research environment or similar activities at a university, state /federal agency, or similar environment is required.
    • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


    Preferred Qualifications
    • Five years progressively responsible related experience.
    • Master’s preferred.
    • Experience developing and conducting trainings on research administration topics.
    • Understanding of Uniform Guidance (2 CFR 200), including cost principles.
    • Knowledge of legal terms and conditions that typically appear in sponsored project agreements and principles of negotiation.
