Associate Director, IT Data Engineer (Remote)

 

BioNTech US is looking for a senior data engineer to develop and maintain data infrastructure and products supporting global R&D use cases as part of BioNTech’s data and analytics platform team. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated data engineering experience in the biotech industry, the initiative to identify problems and introduce solutions, and the interest to mentor team members on best practices.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Develop, maintain, and improve on data pipelines using platforms like Airflow, Spark, and Databricks. Implement and maintain high standards around CICD and testing strategies to ensure data accuracy, completeness, and consistency.
  • Build up and maintain data lake across use case development. Make experience-backed decisions and technical tradeoffs on schema normalization, partitioning, etc. to optimize on query speed, cost, complexity.
  • Identify technical gaps and areas of improvement within the team and company and propose actionable solutions; while having the wisdom to know when, and when not, to push forward a new change.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including research, data science, business intelligence, AI/ML, and IT; understanding use case requirements and building the bridge between data producer and consumer teams in a compliant and scalable way.
  • Provide mentorship to junior team members to help everyone complete tasks according to best practices.

 

Requirements: 

  • Bachelor's degree AND at least 5-10 years of progressively increasing responsibilities building and/or architecting technical solutions
  • Experience in the pharmaceutical or biotech industry is a must (2-3 years)
  • Strong AWS, Airflow, Python, and SQL software development experience with focus on ETL/ELT and related data engineering processes
  • Experience with Databricks and Spark preferred, but not required
  • Demonstrated Lakehouse Architecture experience, including data modeling
  • Experience with DevOps tools and practices (e.g. CI/CD tools like GitHub Actions for automating software development and deployment)
  • Hands-on working style, including the ability to collaborate directly with users to plan and build technical solutions
