Aspen Restoration Internship (BLM, Rawlins Field Office/High Plains District)

The Research Associate Program at GBI, in cooperation with Bureau of Land Management at Rawlins Field Office, is recruiting 2 Interns to participate in Landscape Restoration.

The BLM has designated the Muddy Creek watershed as a restoration landscape.  Restoration Landscapes are nature's infrastructure. They sustain numerous communities and economies. Resilient public lands are critical to the BLM's ability to manage for multiple use and sustained yield.  Aspen communities are an important part of this landscape and provide high quality habitat to a variety of important wildlife species.  Prioritization and management of aspen is a key component to improving resiliency of public lands and resources in the watershed.  

Collection of 500 individual Aspen samples for genetic testing along with field data to support sampling efforts. Inventory all mapped aspen stands within the Muddy Creek Restoration area to verify health, size, access and capabilities for restoration work. Help establish restoration activities to be completed and where possible begin implementation.

Timeline:

• May - September, 12-15 weeks (flexible for the right candidate); 
• Full time (40 hours/week);
• Schedule: 4 Days a week/10 Hours per day.

Location:

The Rawlins Field Office planning area is located in Carbon, Albany, Laramie and Sweetwater counties. It includes approximately 3.5 million acres of public land surface and 4.5 million acres of federal mineral estate.  The Muddy Watershed Area, located south of Rawlins Wyoming covers over 630,000 acres and includes a variety of important habitats and landscape characteristics. Muddy Creek is a tributary of the Colorado River in Southern Wyoming.  The area contains unique fish habitats that support a rare community of native Colorado River Basin fish, including Colorado River cutthroat trout, bluehead sucker, flannel mouth sucker, round tail chub, mountain sucker, and speckled dace.

Compensation:

• $18.75 hourly.

• Bachelor’s degree or coursework and experience in biology, ecology, or a related field;
• Must provide a valid driver’s license and possess a clean driving record;
• Should be self‐motivated with an expressed desire to learn and ability to maintain a positive attitude; 
• Ability to work both within a team setting and independently; 
• Ability to navigate using maps, since GPS technology may not always be available;
• Ability to operate a 4x4 vehicle in off-road type situations in inclement weather.
