Job Description

The Public Safety Division at Virginia Tech is comprised of the Police Department, Environmental Health & Safety, and the Office of Emergency Management and has a critical role in supporting the well-being of our community. We are essential in planning for and responding to emergency events, and in creating a culture of preparedness where employees and students are safe in their work and living environments.

The EHS Training Manager provides strategic direction for the development, provision, and maintenance of training provided by Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) for the entire university. Reporting to the EHS Executive Director, the Training Manager leads a team of 3 team members (AP faculty) to prioritize and deliver training, assure compliance with EHS and university standards, provide technical support for the EHS Learning Management System (LMS), and support training development by other EHS staff following the principles of andragogy. In addition, the Training Manager anticipates and plans for upcoming in-person training to meet university community needs based on training expirations and identified needs of clients and assures an adequate number of classes are scheduled to meet this forecasted demand. The Training Manager also works directly with other departments to help them identify unique training opportunities applicable to their work scope and activities, incorporate EHS training into the departmental curriculums, or the development of stand-alone EHS courses specific to the hazard exposure of their students in their field of study. The Training Manager works with various internal groups to continually evaluate and improve the effectiveness of all training programs, and to strategically plan and prioritize the development of new training offerings.

The incumbent also performs other duties as requested; takes initiative to support a healthy work environment; strives to fulfill the terms in the Standards of Business Conduct; exemplifies the Virginia Tech Principles of Community; and supports the university’s motto, Ut Prosim (That I May Serve).

Required Qualifications

Education
• Advanced degree in occupational health and safety, industrial hygiene, life sciences, or a related field or comparable training and experience that equates to an advanced degree.

Experience
• Demonstrated expertise in andragogy, program management, development of training manuals, curriculum development, and presentation of training programs.
• Experience with computer software used in developing and presenting training programs.
• Experience with developing and presenting training related to EHS
• Prior experience supervising and directing the work of a team of professionals

Preferred Qualifications

• Broad knowledge of environmental health and safety regulations and requirements in both occupational and research settings.
• Experience working in a university setting.
• Experience with social media, multi-media applications, and website content management systems.

Additional Information

• Must successfully complete a pre-employment criminal conviction and driving records check and maintain eligibility to operate a state-owned motor vehicle.
• Work is primarily performed in an office environment and involves considerable sitting and repetitive motion through the use of a computer.
• May need to work additional hours outside of normal schedule to meet the needs of the department and division.
