Job Description
Primary Purpose:
The Performance Excellence team will ensure Norfolk Southern comprehensively prioritizes and solves its most pressing operating challenges, develops lasting processes which support smart growth, and consistently delivers organizational objectives for the least practical cost. The Director Performance Excellence – Operating Practices will play a key role in establishing and imbedding critical processes across operating departments.
Principal Duties
- Develop process improvement collaboration structure that can be replicated across a division; taking into consideration geographical purpose
- Establish leadership commitment with functional leaders (Sr. Directors, AGMs, Division Supts) that leads to rapid adoption of identified best practices
- Create process mapping guidelines that serve all operational departments guiding consistent outcomes in Safety, Service & Cost
- Synthesize senior leader feedback into actionable priorities that serve all interested departments on assigned divisions
- Challenge the status quo of current operating practices on a divisional or objective grouping level while being accountable for creating a compelling vision for change
- Develop concise and prioritized infrastructure needs for division terminals as an input to the infrastructure task force / Strategic Sourcing
- Develop process improvement collaboration structure that can be replicated across divisions; taking into consideration division purpose and business needs
- Establish and document terminal / zone specific standard operating procedures for critical processes including enterprise connections across departments
- Create facility housekeeping standards and facilitate achieving same
- Coach, teach, and train operations stakeholders on standardized best practices
Experience:
- Required Years of Experience: 3-5 in a transportation related field
- Preferred Years of Experience: 5-10 in a transportation related field
Education:
Bachelors degree in a transportation, business, or logistics related field

Technical Skills:
- Microsoft Suite
- Inventory planning tools usage
Other Skills and Abilities:
- Create, maintain, and publish process playbooks for each division with input from all operating departments
- Imbed effective and proactive triggers and escalations for critical execution elements for all operating departments
- Refine roles and responsibilities for operating department stakeholders to enhance the predictability of customer outcomes
- Drive first mile / last mile planning and performance through customer group collaboration
