We’re looking to hire a Technical Team Lead located within Africa to join our fast-growing, fully remote team. You will join our Commercial Pod, the team that owns the systems our commercial business runs on: trade execution, treasury operations, commercial operations, and the internal tooling our operations teams use every day. These systems handle real money in real time, across multiple currencies and regulators.
As a Technical Team Lead, you will own architecture, lead the hardest implementations yourself, and set the standard for how the pod builds. This is deliberately not a management role. Your Engineering Manager handles 1:1s, performance, and growth conversations. You own technical direction and technical quality, and you stay deep in the code, with roughly 90% of your time hands-on.
This role is full-stack by requirement, not by preference. Our commercial surfaces span a Vue 3 B2B portal and a fleet of TypeScript services on AWS, and the interesting problems, such as how a rate is fetched, cached, priced, displayed, and then traded against, cut straight across that boundary. We need someone who can hold the whole path in their head and make calls at either end.
Candidates with experience in FinTech or Crypto products are strongly preferred. We value clear communication, strong ownership, and engineers who raise the bar for everyone around them.
Our technology stack includes: TypeScript, Node.js, Vue 3 (Composition API), Pinia, Vite, Vitest, Storybook, Serverless Framework, AWS Lambda, DynamoDB, RDS, AWS SQS, SNS, EventBridge, Step Functions, EKS with Helm and Istio, Valkey and ElastiCache, S3, API Gateway, Cognito, AWS Bedrock, Datadog, GitHub Actions, and more.
What You'll Do
- Own the architecture of Commercial Pod systems end-to-end: service boundaries, data models, event flows, and the contracts between our frontend and our services
- Lead the pod’s design doc process. Write the hard ones, review the rest, and run the design doc review sessions where designs get pressure-tested before anyone writes code
- Represent Commercial in our org-wide engineering standards programme, reviewing RFCs as a Technical Lead and driving their adoption inside the pod: auditing existing services against approved standards and sequencing the gap-closing work
- Make and document the trade-offs. Serverless versus containerised, synchronous versus event-driven, build versus integrate. Then explain the reasoning so the pod can make the next call without you
- Take the highest-risk production implementations yourself, building across both the Vue 3 frontend and our TypeScript serverless and containerised services
- Set the engineering bar through your own code and your reviews: strict typing, real test coverage, structured logs, correlation IDs, graceful failure handling, and fault tolerance as a design goal rather than an aspiration
- Own the production health of Commercial services: meaningful Datadog dashboards, monitors and SLOs with thresholds that reflect reality, and alerts a person can act on at 3 am
- Lead incident response and root cause analysis for Commercial systems, and make sure the follow-up work actually ships
- Take part in the technical lead dev support rota, roughly once every five weeks.
- Mentor the engineers in the pod, growing their architectural judgement and not just their throughput, in partnership with the Engineering Manager
- Partner with the Product Manager to turn commercial priorities into a technical plan, and to be honest about cost, risk, and sequencing
- Run and encourage Knowledge Sharing Sessions, and keep the pod’s technical documentation trustworthy
