Department Overview
The Assistant Nurse Manager will work primarily with the postpartum unit. They will also help to support the needs of the Neonatal ICU and Labor & Delivery team on an ad-hoc basis. The postpartum floor is a 27-bed unit that provides postpartum, antepartum and gynecological care. The Birth Center team cares for both low and high-risk populations for newborn and perinatal patients.
OHSU is a Magnet designated teaching hospital. The work on this unit supports:
- Specialized gynecological surgeries.
- Inpatient lactations services.
- A large volume of high acuity patients.
- Approximately 200 deliveries/month.
- Long-term antepartum care.

Function/Duties of Position
The Assistant Nurse Manager (ANM) is a registered nurse (RN) who is responsible for upholding excellence in the provision of nursing care through the implementation of the Profession Practice Model. The ANM, in association with the Nurse Manager, is responsible for the managerial and leadership functions within a patient environment. The ANM functions primarily on evening and nightshift hours to provide operational oversight, consistency and continuity. The ANM partners with the interdisciplinary care team to ensure the delivery of safe, quality patient care and compliance with regulatory standards, and administrative and clinical policies and procedures. The ANM performs managerial activities, and demonstrates effective leadership behaviors including performing evaluations, employee mentoring, coaching, and performance management. The ANM implements quality and safety initiatives, engages in process improvement, ensures adherence to bargaining unit agreements and human resource management. The ANM creates and sustains a patient care environment that supports a safe, knowledgeable, compassionate, productive, and engaged staff.
The ANM’s decisions and actions are based on ethical principles as outlined by the American Nurses Association. The ANM practices in adherence with the American Nurses Association’s (ANA) Nursing Administration: Scope and Standards of Practice for Nurse Administrators, the ANA Code of Ethics, the Oregon State Board Nurse Practice Act, and within the context of the Nurse Executive Competencies developed by the American Organization of Nurse Executives (AONE). Strategic Planning:
- Assists in development of the department strategic plan that reflects the division strategic plan and nursing’s vision.
- Participates in formulating objectives, goals and specific strategies related to initiatives.
- Assists in developing short and long-term goals that identify the target conditions.
- Assists in coordinating the implementation of interventions to meet department-level goals.
- Assists with communicating implementing, and evaluating the unit strategic plan.
Operational Leadership
- Ascribes to systems theory with an understanding that how parts of a system relate to the overall system.
- Maintains knowledge of current nursing practice and the roles and functions of care team members (e.g. charge nurse, code team, RRT)
- Evaluates staff’s competency and intervenes to optimize performance and ensure safe, quality, effective and efficient patient care.
- Promotes and practices patient/family advocacy.
- Maintains visibility and open communication with the staff and department leadership.
- Communicates plans and decisions to department staff and other stakeholders.
