Pay Range

$5,380.00 - $7,372.00 Monthly

This is the lowest to highest salary we in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting; pay will not be below any applicable local minimum wage.  An employee’s position within the salary range will be based on several factors including, but not limited to, specific competencies, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, seniority, geographic location, performance, and business or organizational needs.

Job Description

We have an opening for an Academic Graduate Appointee to support our work on nuclear nonproliferation, with an emphasis on international nuclear safeguards and multilateral export control regimes. As a member of an interdisciplinary team, you will support the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) and other sponsors by developing and executing nonproliferation-related research and activities aimed at strengthening the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and nuclear safeguards capacity worldwide. This position is in the Nonproliferation and Arms Control (NPAC) group of the Global Security Principal Directorate's Nuclear Threat Reduction (N) Program.

You will:

• Maintain keen awareness of current events and key developments relevant to the program's areas of responsibility.
• Collect, evaluate, and assess multiple-source information relevant to international nuclear safeguards and export controls, e.g., in the area of human capital development, international engagements, policy, and technology research and development, such as advanced reactors.
• Contribute to the development of international analyses, policy, and training documents and initiatives to strengthen nuclear safeguards capacity worldwide.
• Assemble and curate open-source data sets for use in training and testing advanced information analysis tools and algorithms for nonproliferation applications.
• Present formal and informal overviews of results and findings at team meetings.
• Produce written reports on research results.
• Perform minimal domestic travel
• Maintain and ensure quality standards for deliverables.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Ability to obtain and maintain a US DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. Citizenship. 
• Master's degree in physical science, nuclear engineering, political science, or other relevant field
• Knowledge and experience with the global nuclear nonproliferation regime and the policy context of general international security issues
• Knowledge of the IAEA safeguards system
• Experience with collection and analysis of open-source information on nuclear fuel cycle development activities
• Experience preparing comprehensive high-quality written reports under minimal direction and making formal presentations
• Effective communication and interpersonal skills necessary to work in a collaborative research environment and to document and present research results

Desired qualifications

• Basic understanding of coding and machine learning
• Experience applying data analytics methodologies to the assessment of nuclear activities
