About the role

Netflix is one of the world's leading entertainment services, with 283 million paid memberships in over 190 countries enjoying TV series, films and games across a wide variety of genres and languages. Members can play, pause and resume watching as much as they want, anytime, anywhere, and can change their plans at any time.

The Member Data Products team builds tooling and applications to empower data scientists, analysts, and the Product business area with self-serve data and insights. Drawing from our backgrounds as a group of analysts, data scientists, and engineers, our deliverables range from custom apps to internal toolkits, methodologies, and robust, easy-to-query datasets.

The manager for the Member Insights Engineering sub-team within Member Data Products will bring together a talented group of analytics engineers and data scientists who are focused on building analytical datasets and tooling to automate insights generation in applications owned by our team. The work on this new team has a strong technical lean. A successful candidate will have the ability to work effectively with engineering-centric tooling and systems, coupled with a deep interest in reducing toil for data consumers further down the value chain.

In this role, you will:

  • Lead a team of diverse functions, including analytics engineers and data scientists, offering technical guidance and mentorship to foster their growth

  • Shape and steer the vision and roadmap, balancing the needs of internal and external stakeholders while navigating a variety of technical blockers

  • Partner effectively with visualization engineers who will use your team’s outputs as inputs to applications, and data engineers who deliver large scale datasets as inputs to your own team’s work

  • Build strong relationships with and empathy for data consumers, namely partner data science teams and the Product and Merchandizing business areas

  • Influence the roadmaps of data engineering, experimentation platform, and analytics platform teams to accelerate progress on your own team

  • Evangelize for technology-driven productivity improvements, while maintaining a balance between creativity and out-of-the-box thinking with pragmatism and a keen eye for impact

  • Hire, inspire, and grow high-performing team members

The ideal candidate:

  • You have experience leading fast-paced teams that work with widely-used datasets, libraries, and tools. Bonus points for prior experience working with viz engineers.

  • You have experience working with large scale data in relatively raw forms, and the ability to effectively influence data engineering, client engineering, and platform teams upstream of your team’s work.

  • You are a systems thinker who can drive consolidation in a fragmented technical space.

  • You have exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, with proven ability to collaborate effectively with both technical and non-technical business partners.

  • You have strong technical acumen and can act as a credible technical advisor to the team, set and enforce a high-quality bar for code and system design, and be a mentor for the team.

  • You have a demonstrated ability to develop, drive, and execute a technical vision and roadmap.

  • You thrive in ambiguity and excel in fast-paced environments.

  • You are excited by the opportunity to design creative and clever ways to reduce toil for our teammates within Member DSE by automating their most mundane tasks and making time-consuming tasks easier and more efficient
