Job Description

This position is recognized as a content expert in immigration rules and regulations and serves as a Designated School Official (DSO) and as an Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) to federal programs by assisting F-1 and J-1 visa holding international students and J-1 visa holding scholars to achieve their objectives within the guidelines of immigration regulations. The individual may serve in the Principal Designated School Official (PDSO) role and Responsible Officers (RO) role on a rotating basis based on the needs of the unit. Committed to ensure organizational compliance with federal immigration regulations. Build strategic collaborations with key partners to maximize international student success and retention which entails regular negotiation for resources to adequately serve international students and scholars. Management of accurate record keeping system used to make informed institutional decisions which includes regular advocacy, persuasion and education of campus leaders and stakeholders. Leads immigration related training initiatives for all student and staff team members. Creates programs and events that address specific needs of international students that support international success and retention. Establishes initiatives that expand the internationalization of the campus.

• Immigration advising & support- Provide direct counseling and advising to F-1 students and their dependents, and J-1 visa holding international students and scholars and their dependents regarding their personal, financial, academic, intercultural, social, and immigration issues/concerns. Immigration-related matters may include: F-1/J-1 status maintenance, visa renewals, passport renewals, travel, employment authorization, changes in program or degree level, and changes in status. Design and deliver presentations to F-1 and J-1 visa holding international students and J-1 visa holding scholars on federal immigration procedures and regulations. Responsible for the creation and implementation of a comprehensive and robust communication plan with appropriate timelines addressing pertinent topics applicable to international students and scholars. The focus of these messages will be to educate, prepare, guide and support, empower and remind individuals as they transition through their academic journey. Ultimately, the individual is responsible for assisting students in navigating the complexities of the U.S. higher education system to promote their academic and personal success. This may include regularly advocating and persuading administration and campus partners to allocate necessary resources to promote international student success and retention. Serve as a key resource for the campus community in regards to understanding the implications of university policies, processes, and decisions on the immigration status of international students and scholars.

• Compliance with federal immigration regulations- This position will serve as a Designated School Official (DSO) and/or Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) which directly engages with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) regarding compliance with the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS). The position may also be asked to serve as a Principal Designated School Official (PDSO) and/or Responsible Officer (RO) on a rotating basis based on the needs of the department, which will act as the main point of contact with federal governmental agencies- DHS and ICE. As the PDSO, this includes ensuring that the institution maintains its SEVIS certification.The role requires keeping the school in compliance with federal immigration regulations for F-1 and J-1 visa holding students and their dependents, ensuring accurate record-keeping and providing leadership at the school in regards to upholding immigration regulations. The member will be expected to actively monitor rules, regulations, guidance, updates, and applicable communication from government entities/organizations to maximize the accuracy and thoroughness of the immigration advising provided by CIS advisors.
