About the role

Description

The Surgical Physician Assistant provides medical and surgical care across all phases of perioperative care, from pre-operative planning and post-operative recovery to assisting in surgery. The surgical PA functions as an integral health care provider in collaboration with Attending Physicians to enhance the quality of patient care outcomes.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Developing treatment plans, managing inpatient care, and conducting inpatient rounds before and after surgery.
  • Assisting in complex robotic urologic operations, including robotic partial nephrectomy, prostatectomy, and cystectomy, with responsibilities such as patient positioning, bedside assisting, and wound closure. 
  • Assisting in surgical procedures at both Stony Brook University Hospital and the Stony Brook Medicine Ambulatory Care Center.
  • Providing patient education, writing orders, prescribing medications, and managing ongoing care.
  • Performing inpatient urologic consultation, foley catheter insertions, and bedside procedures under supervision by Attending Physicians. 
  • Participating in professional development, including Department of Urology Grand Rounds and continuing medical education.
  • Maintaining ongoing communication with collaborating physicians regarding patient care and administrative matters.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Current (or eligible) New York State Physician Assistant license and NCCPA certification.
  • Bachelor’s degree (foreign equivalent or higher).
  • Graduation from an ARC-PA accredited program or equivalent surgical training/experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience in Urology.
  • Surgical experience, particularly with the Da Vinci robotic system.
  • Clinical experience at Stony Brook Medicine (inpatient and/or outpatient).
  • Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies.
