The Maine Department of Environmental Protection, Bureau of Remediation and Waste Management, is seeking to fill an Environmental Specialist III vacancy in Augusta.

 

BRIEF JOB DESCRIPTION: This professional services position implements, administers, and enforces the Stewardship Program for Packaging (“program”) in the Department’s Sustainability Unit. The position may also assist with other recycling and product stewardship programs within the Unit. Continued implementation of the program will include rulemaking, extensive outreach with various stakeholders, and development of a bid package for the selection of the stewardship organization. Administration and enforcement of the program will require working with staff, stakeholders, and the stewardship organization to provide education and outreach statewide; facilitate municipal participation and municipal data collection; provide compliance assistance to producers; provide oversight, administration, and enforcement of alternative collection programs; organize, schedule, and facilitate ongoing stakeholder meetings for annual program processes; develop, analyze, and review annual reports; and perform ongoing program assessment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A six (6) year combination of education and/or experience in environmental, biological, physical science, or engineering which includes two (2) years of environmental experience. Qualifying education must include at least 15 credit hours of science or engineering coursework from an accredited educational institution.

Preference will be given to candidates with the following skills or experience:

  • Knowledge of Maine's municipal solid waste management programs and systems
  • Knowledge of extended producer responsibility and product stewardship programs
  • Proficiency in understanding, interpreting, and synthesizing information from multiple, complex texts to infer meaning and draw conclusions
  • Clear written and verbal communication
  • Sound judgement and decision making
  • Demonstrated willingness to take initiative and action
  • Cooperative and collaborative
  • Organized with good time management skills
