About the role

Are you looking for an exciting job where you can put your skills and talents to work at a company you can feel proud to be a part of? Do you want a workplace that will challenge you and offer you opportunities to learn and grow?  A  position at Xcel Energy could be just what you’re looking for.

Position Summary

The Senior Data Product Engineer delivers and curates certified data products within a defined business data domain, turning the Data Product Owner’s vision and backlog into trusted, reusable analytics assets on the enterprise data platform. This role blends hands-on analytics engineering with an enablement focus, building data products against the enterprise certification framework while coaching federated business teams to build to standards themselves.

The role enables business success by delivering well-modeled, governed data products that scale across the domain, by transferring capability to business users and domain analysts so delivery is not bottlenecked centrally, and by ensuring every product aligns to enterprise data platforms, standards, and architecture.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Data Product Delivery & Curation (35%): Build, curate, and maintain certified data products within an assigned business domain. Translate backlog items, user stories, and acceptance criteria into well-modeled datasets, semantic layers, and analytics solutions. Develop and optimize queries, transformations, and data models on Databricks and enterprise BI platforms. Ensure products are documented, performant, and fit for reuse.
  • Enablement & Capability Transfer (30%): Coach federated business teams and domain analysts to build and extend analytics to enterprise standards on Databricks (Xcel Data Fabric). Develop reusable templates, patterns, and self-service assets that reduce dependence on central delivery. Enable business users on Databricks, Power BI, SAP Analytics Cloud, and BusinessObjects. Provide office hours, documentation, and knowledge transfer so capability scales across the domain.
  • Analytics Engineering & Collaboration (20%): Partner with Data Product Owners, engineers, architects, governance, and security teams to deliver scalable solutions. Participate in Agile ceremonies and backlog refinement. Investigate and resolve data quality and performance issues through root cause analysis. Make timely, value-based delivery decisions within the product team.
  • Standards, Quality & Governance (15%): Apply the enterprise data product certification framework and risk-based guardrails appropriate to each product. Ensure solutions adhere to enterprise standards, classification, lineage, and security requirements. Promote high standards for data quality, documentation, and continuous improvement in analytics delivery practices.
  • Integrate AI and generative AI capabilities into data products to drive automation, advanced analytics, and scalable insight generation across business domains.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in data analytics, Information Systems, Business Administration, IT, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 5+ years of experience in data analytics, business intelligence, or analytics engineering roles.
  • Strong hands-on experience with SQL, data modeling, and analytics platforms such as Power BI.
  • Databricks experience preferred (Unity Catalog, Delta Live Tables, Lakehouse Monitoring, etc.).
  • Experience enabling or coaching business users on self-service analytics.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and documentation skills.
  • Familiarity with data governance, classification, and data quality concepts.
  • Experience participating in Agile delivery teams.

Preferred Requirements

  • Gas and/or Electric Utility Industry experience preferred.
  • Experience building certified or reusable data products in a federated or data mesh operating model.
  • Experience in regulated or operationally critical environments.
  • Familiarity with semantic layers and metric standardization across analytics solutions
