As a State and Local Tax Supervisor within the RSM SALT Group in the Washington Metro Market, you will be a valuable member on engagements and provide state tax compliance and consulting services to a diverse client base in the pass-through space (partnerships and S corporations) and have access to an elite group of specialists when needed.

Responsibilities will include: 

  • Supervise the completion of state tax compliance and consulting projects for various pass-through entities focused on private equity groups, fund-of-funds, asset management, management companies, real estate, and consumer/industrial product and technology

  • Maintain and develop strong client relationships on various tax compliance/consulting engagements.

  • Advise clients on a variety of issues including pass-through returns and review of associated work papers, with attention to state tax issues such as allocation, apportionment, sourcing, modifications, nexus, unitary filings, flow-through taxation, state composite, and state withholding.

  • Review information presented on state income tax returns before, during and after preparation.

  • Coordinate with RSM tax preparation team and with the client. 

  • Build and manage client relationships, and supervise, mentor, and develop staff

  • Oversee detailed review of estimated payments, withholding and composite tax calculations, as well as owner packages including state K-1s and related filings.

  • Research and analyze state tax law, rules, regulations, case law, and legislation and assist with the overall impact on the compliance and reporting process.

  • Manage and lead various tax consulting projects including research and writing projects related to tax planning, gain/loss calculations, liquidity events, restructuring, nexus and sourcing studies, audit defense and controversy, and state tax notices. 

  • Manage resource requirements, project workflow, budgets, billing and collections, and prepare and/or coordinating complex written and verbal materials.

  • Supervise team members to create an atmosphere of trust.

  • Coach and develop staff including providing timely meaningful written and verbal feedback.

Basic Qualifications:

  • CPA, CMI, JD or LLM required

  • BS Degree in Accounting

  • 5+ years of current or recent experience in public accounting or corporate tax department

  • Familiarity with researching state tax laws and regulations

  • Strong communication and writing skills

  • Tax compliance experience/background a plus
