The current position is located at San Francisco Department of Public Works. The eligible list resulting from this examination may be utilized for future positions in this class in other City departments. 

San Francisco Public Works (SF Public Works) is recruiting to fill the position of Superintendent in the Bureau of Building and Street Repair (BBSR). This position is responsible for administering an annual budget of around 58 million dollars and managing a staff of 120 to 130 permanent and temporary employees.

Job Description

SF Public Work is seeking a Superintendent to lead the Bureau of Building and Street Repair (BBSR). Reporting to the Deputy Director for Operations, this position provides strategic and administrative direction for all bureau activities. The Superintendent ensures the effective maintenance, repair, operation, and improvement of critical City infrastructure, including buildings, streets, and related structures, while managing personnel, budgets, and key stakeholder relationships.

Core Responsibilities:

Bureau Leadership & Management: 

  • Direct and oversee all daily operations and activities of the BBSR.
  • Develop, implement, and refine bureau policies, procedures, and methods to improve efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Manage and supervise bureau personnel, fostering a productive and safe work environment.
  • Oversee the preparation and administration of the bureau's budget, operational records, and reports.

Infrastructure Maintenance & Repair: 

  • Manage the maintenance, repair, alteration, custodial services, and operation of City buildings and structures under Public Works jurisdiction.
  • Oversee construction projects for the maintenance, repair, and improvement of City streets and associated structures (steps, guardrails, retaining walls, etc.).
  • Direct emergency response efforts for street obstructions (e.g., slides, washouts), ensuring timely resolution.
  • Manage specialized maintenance projects, including regular clearing operations and the annual Noriega Seawall sand removal and dune reshaping.

Stakeholder Relations & Compliance: 

  • Serve as a primary point of contact and liaison with other City departments, external organizations, and the public regarding bureau activities.
  • Ensure all bureau operations and projects comply with established work practices, safety standards, and relevant regulations.
