ASSISTANT/ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR OF SMALL ANIMAL RADIATION ONCOLOGY- ACADEMIC CLINICIAN

The University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine, Department of Clinical Sciences and Advanced Medicine invites applications for a faculty position in Small Animal Radiation Oncology. This position is in the Academic Clinician (AC) track of the University of Pennsylvania and at the level of Assistant or Associate Professor, depending on the candidate’s experience.

 

Academic Clinicians spend the majority of their effort in clinical service and clinical teaching endeavors. The successful candidate is expected to have history of or potential as an exemplary clinician and educator. Members of faculty in the AC track in Radiation Oncology provide clinical service/teaching equivalent of 42 weeks per year in the Matthew J. Ryan Veterinary Hospital and participate in patient care, clinical instruction of veterinary students, training of specialty and rotating interns and oncology residents, and supervision of veterinary nurses. Potential for collaborative research abounds, but advancement within this faculty track does not include a research requirement. Clinical responsibilities include treatment planning (including manual, forward, and inverse planning), participation in comprehensive oncology rounds, student, nurse, and house officer instruction and mentoring, and primary care of radiation oncology patients. Time outside of clinical service is used for professional development, citizenship in the Department, and didactic teaching. Developing or maintaining an independent scholarship or research is not a focus of the AC track, is not a requirement for reappointment or promotion, and should not detract from excellence in clinical service and teaching.

 

Faculty AC positions are long-term, non-tenured Associated Faculty positions with reappointment every three years. Promotion along the ladder of the University Academic ranks is available. Salary will be commensurate with experience. For this position, the successful candidate will join Penn Vet’s existing Radiation Oncology service, which includes a Full Clinical Professor (AC track) and an Assistant Professor (CE track) of Radiation Oncology, one and half dedicated nurse-anesthetist, one Certified Veterinary Technician/service coordinator, one registered technologist in Radiation Therapy, and two specialty RO interns. The service also plans to start a radiation oncology residency program in the Fall of 2026. Advantages of the position include a Comprehensive Oncology service with dedicated medical and radiation oncologists working as a team, support from Soft Tissue Surgery, a dynamic hospital setting with a diverse, complex caseload, and excellent support staff. PennVet is an exciting intellectual environment with outstanding residents and senior clinicians, including faculty boarded in oncology, surgery, radiology, anesthesia, and clinical pathology. Facilities include a Varian Silhouette with RapidArc, OBI/CBCT, Eclipse TPS, and Aria R&V. A complete upgrade of the current radiation therapy equipment is underway. Dedicated medical physics support is provided through the University of Pennsylvania’s healthcare system. Imaging modalities include a 64-slice CT and 1.5T MRI. The proximity to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and the Perelman School of Medicine provides ample opportunities for collaboration and consultation for unusual cases or research opportunities.

 

This position is particularly suited for junior faculty with an interest in collaborative clinical practice, looking to build and grow a program in a multi-specialty Academic referral center with a high caseload. The Comprehensive Oncology program is ideally positioned to offer outstanding oncology services and participates in multiple oncology clinical trials.
