About the role

Description

The Research Scientist will lead atmospheric modeling and urban heat scenario analysis, supporting ClimateIQ’s heat risk research efforts. The Scientist will lead WRF modeling and related heat exposure and risk approaches, coding, spatial analysis, data sourcing and management; develop publications and conference presentations; and assist with training and mentoring graduate and undergraduate students on spatial and modeling techniques. The position will also be responsible for climate modeling with a focus on urban heat modeling in multiple cities and contribute to multiple projects, advancing the science of urban climate risk, vulnerability and adaptation. 

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement atmospheric models to assess urban heat risks.

  • Conduct high-resolution Weather Research Forecasting (WRF) simulations for heat mitigation strategies.

  • Analyze climate projections and extreme heat scenarios to inform resilience planning.

  • Work with municipal agencies and climate policy experts to integrate findings into urban heat adaptation strategies.

  • Collaborate with data scientists and engineers to improve climate model accuracy and efficiency.

In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary for this position is $72,500.  New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) the specific grant funding and the terms of the research grant when extending an offer.

Qualifications

  • PhD or Master’s degree in Atmospheric Science, Climate Science, Meteorology, or a related field.

  • Experience with WRF, climate modeling software, and GIS-based climate risk analysis.

  • Strong data analysis and programming skills (Python, MATLAB, R, Fortran).

  • Familiarity with urban climate adaptation strategies and policy frameworks.

  • Ability to translate technical research into policy-relevant insights.
