About the role

As a Senior Director, you will be responsible for defining the technical vision and strategy for the Data Movement & Streaming team, driving the development of a comprehensive technical roadmap, and leading a team of senior managers and individual contributors to deliver enterprise-wide products that operate with excellence, performance, and efficiency. You will play a critical role in driving GEICO's insurance business transformation, transitioning from a traditional IT model to a tech organization with engineering excellence at its core.

Key Responsibilities

Define and execute a technical vision and strategy for Data Engineering, aligning with GEICO's business objectives

Lead and manage a team of senior managers and individual contributors to design, develop, and maintain robust data movement pipelines

Drive technology and talent transformation journeys, leveraging prior experience in organizational transformation

Develop and manage the financial aspects of the data engineering portfolio, including budgeting, forecasting, and resource allocation

Collaborate with product and program teams within a matrix organization to drive business outcomes

Hire and grow high-performing teams from scratch, with a focus on attracting and retaining top talent

Work closely with stakeholders to prioritize and roadmap new data initiatives, ensuring alignment with business objectives and technical feasibility

Manage the end-to-end lifecycle of data pipelines, including monitoring, troubleshooting, and optimization

Stay current with emerging technologies and industry trends in data movement and provide guidance on their adoption and implementation

Work effectively in a hybrid cloud environment, leveraging cloud-native technologies and services

Establish GEICO as a tech industry leader through tech branding, outreach, and industry participation

Represent GEICO in industry conferences, meetups, and other technical forums

Qualifications

15+ years of industry experience, with at least 7+ years of managerial experience

Proven track record of success in leading large-scale, mission-critical distributed systems

Advanced Degree (Master's/PhD) in Computer Science, Engineering, Data Science, Information Technology, or a related field

Deep technical expertise in Big Data technologies, including Data Movement and Data Streaming

Strong understanding of cloud computing technologies and concepts

Excellent communication skills, with the ability to articulate technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders

Proven ability to identify and grow talent, with a focus on developing high-performing teams

Experience working in a matrix organization, with a focus on collaboration and influence

Prior experience in organizational transformation, technology transformation, and talent transformation journeys

Preferred Qualifications

Experience working with containerization and orchestration technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes

Knowledge of data warehousing concepts and technologies

Fluency with RESTful Web Services, Event-Driven Architectures, and at least one modern language such as Python, Java, or Go

Experience with application monitoring tools and performance assessments

Experience with version control systems and CI/CD pipelines for automated testing and deployment

Established network of industry contacts and a strong reputation in the tech community
