About the role

Definition The employee in this position will assist the school nurse with student health needs as delegated by the lead nurse.
Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: First Aid/Sick Students: • Document all visits and keep a log to share with the nurse. • Do not exceed your training when administering first aid. Receiving Request for Medication Administration at School Forms: • Check for a child’s name and DOB • Review the medication name, dose, and time to give the medication • Verify that orders and the prescription label match. • Make sure there is a MD and parent's signature • Make a note when the paperwork and/or medication were received. • Complete the Medication Check-In Log with the parent's signature. If the medication is to be given in the office: • Notify the teacher of what time to send the child for their medication. • Create a Daily Medication Administration sheet. • Place the original paperwork in the Daily Medication Book. If the medication goes in the crisis bag (ONLY Asthma inhalers, EpiPens, Diabetic Supplies, etc.): • Make a copy of the Medication Administration at School form. • Create a PRN Medication Administration Record Log. • In bag, place medication and a copy of the Medication Administration form. *Make sure the child’s name and home room teacher is on the bag* • Deliver the medication to the teacher: ONLY if they have completed the necessary training to administer medication. If they have not completed the necessary training, store the medication in the office until the RN is able to train them. • Place the original paperwork in the PRN Medication Book and make a note Did the physician check the box allowing the student to Self-Carry?: • Place the original paperwork in the front pocket of the Medication Book. • The school nurse will meet with the child on her next visit. Administering Medication: • When giving medication, make sure you follow the six “Rights” ■ Right student ■ Right medication ■ Right dose ■ Right route ■ Right documentation ■ Right time • If there is a medication error, complete the Medication Incident/Error Record New Enrollments: • Check to make sure all new enrollments are up to date on immunizations. • Verify all new enrollments have a North Carolina Health Assessment. • Keep a spreadsheet of all new enrollments to track who is compliant or not. Unique Mealtime Needs (a.k.a. Diet Orders): • Fax the order to the Child Nutrition office • Give a copy of the diet order to the cafeteria manager student’s teacher. • Place original paperwork in the Medication Book. Powerschool/Infinite Campus: • Input any health concern noted on the Health Assessment form. • Update PowerSchool “Medical Alert” if needed. • Enter vision screening results under the “Screenings Tab”.
If there is a health concern, please make sure to give parents the appropriate healthcare paperwork we need to have available at school to ensure an accurate health plan is developed.
Essential Job Functions  • Initiate, maintain, and update student medical and health records and databases on an ongoing basis as directed by the Lead Nurse at an assigned site.  • Understands the School Health Technician’s role, which does not involve medical assessment interpretation or decision-making.  • Accept delegation of student health care needs from the assigned school nurse that are routine with a predictable outcome, including the administration of medication.  • Understand and maintain student and staff confidentiality.  • Maintain and update immunization records. Assist in securing noted immunization deficiencies.  • Provide basic first aid and emergency care to ill or injured students as directed by the Lead Nurse and in accordance with NC Emergency Guidelines for Schools.  • Assist and participate in health screening programs.  • Maintain a student sign-in log for all visits on students seen in the health room.  • Perform and document accurate vital signs on students seen in the health room.  • Assist with maintaining a clean and healthful school environment as assigned.  • Work with an assigned School Nurse in a team approach.  • Respond constructively to supervision.  • Relate positively to students, parents, and colleagues.  •
