Job Description

The Department of Applied Statistics, Social Science, and Humanities at New York University is seeking to hire an instructor for an undergraduate level course titled “Power and Politics of Data”. The constituency of this course encompasses undergraduate students from a variety of majors, but with little exposure to statistics. This fourteen week course is offered in person on NYU’s Washington Square campus on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:30 pm to 1:45 pm starting September 2nd 2025.

The course description

“The course empowers students to improve the social impact of data-driven analysis. Through the lens of power and politics, students explore human experiences shaped by algorithms, machine learning, and artificial intelligence and how data is collected, what is chosen for analysis, how it is interpreted, and why these decisions matter. The course provides historical background on issues of data privacy, digital exclusion, and online discrimination. Building both quantitative reasoning and critical thinking skills, the course is designed for students either in the sciences or humanities. No statistics prerequisite.”

Responsibilities

The instructor is expected to do the following: provide lectures twice a week at the aforementioned times; coordinate release of materials; monitor student progress; and offer support outside of class (e.g. through discussion forums and office hours). Some materials are available in the form of a previous syllabus.

Pay Statement

In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the contact hour rate for this position is $222.27. This rate is based on the collective bargaining agreement with Local 7902.

Qualifications

Qualified Applicants will have an advanced degree (PhD preferred). Previous experience teaching a similar course to undergraduate students is preferred. Previous experience teaching more broadly is required.
