THIS IS A CITYWIDE RECRUITMENT FOR CURRENT CITY EMPLOYEES ONLY.

This is an Exempt to Permanent position in accordance with Class-Based Test (CBT) Civil Service Rules. This recruitment is restricted to current exempt employees of the City and County of San Francisco, San Francisco Unified School District, or San Francisco City College, working within the 7502 Asphalt Worker classification and only those who meet this requirement will be placed on the eligible list for consideration of future permanent position.

Job Description

Under supervision, the essential functions of the Asphalt Worker include: removing old pavement material; preparing surfaces for repair; spreading, compacting and smoothing hot asphaltic material and other road resurfacing applications in connection with street maintenance and repair projects; and operating asphalt kettle and / or automatic emulsion spray rake and tool heater. Performs related duties as assigned.

MAJOR, IMPORTANT, AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES
According to Civil Service Commission Rule 109, the duties specified below are representative of the range of duties assigned to this job code and are not intended to be an inclusive list.

1. Removes old pavement and prepares surface for repaving including the use of pneumatic tools.

2. Prepares surface for asphaltic mixture by "painting".

3. Shovels, rakes, spreads hot asphaltic material in the repair or resurfacing of streets.

4. Compacts & smooths asphaltic patches by rolling.

5. Operates asphalt kettle and / or automatic emulsion spray rake and tool heater.

6. Places and removes barricades and cleans up job site upon completion of work.

The nature of the work requires sustained physical effort involving considerable standing and bending, use of hand and pneumatic tools, lifting objects weighing up to 90 pounds, exposure to hot asphaltic mixtures, disagreeable weather conditions, and working conditions where moderately serious injuries may occur.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet the Minimum Qualifications requirement by the final filing date unless otherwise noted.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience: 

Current Category 16, 17, or 18 Exempt Employee in Class 7502 who has worked at least 2,080 hours in class 7502;

AND

Experience:

One (1) year of verifiable experience in construction and/or street paving and repair work as an asphalt worker;

AND

License:

Possession of a valid driver's license at the time of hire.
