Job Summary

Work arrangement - Onsite in Washington, DC, Philadelphia, PA, Wilmington, DE

 

This role collaborates with multiple software developers, application architects, and business analysts on business initiatives. The Lead Software Engineer works on major projects providing subject matter expertise and technical direction and is also responsible for systems analysis, design, development, integration, and enhancement. The position works closely with customers, business analysts and team members to understand the business requirements that drive the analysis and design of quality technical solutions.   As a Lead software engineer at Amtrak, you will experience the foundational business use cases and make tangible impact on a wide range of complex, transformational projects in a real-world rail industry environment. You will work under close supervision of a project/program/technical manager and in collaboration with all levels of stakeholders: from department leaders to project/program managers, business analysts, and functional leads. 

Essential Functions

  • Design, develop, and support end‑to‑end integrations using SAP PI/PO and SAP Integration Suite (Cloud Integration).
  • Build and maintain interfaces between SAP ECC/S/4HANA and SAP/non‑SAP systems using REST, SOAP, OData, IDoc, RFC, XML, and JSON.
  • Develop and troubleshoot ABAP integration components (Proxies, IDocs, BAPIs, RFCs, enhancements).
  • Monitor, troubleshoot, and resolve complex integration issues across distributed system landscapes.
  • Co-ordinate transports, deployments, and release cycles using Solution Manager and BTP CTMS, coordinating across environments.
  • Collaborate with technical and business stakeholders, providing clear communication, analysis, and guidance.

Minimum Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent combination of education, training and/or relevant experience. 
    • Plus 6 years of relevant work experience.
    • SAP Integration Suite (Cloud Integration/iFlows, mappings, scripting, adapters)
    • SAP PI/PO (Design, ESR, mappings, adapters, monitoring, troubleshooting)
    • SAP ABAP (Proxies, IDocs, BAPIs, RFCs, enhancements, debugging)
    • Strong experience integrating SAP ECC and/or S/4HANA with SAP and non-SAP systems.
    • Proficiency in REST, SOAP, OData, IDoc, RFC, and data formats such as XML and JSON.
    • Solid understanding of middleware security concepts including OAuth2, certificates, SSL, JWT, and authentication/authorization mechanisms.
    • Experience with transport management (SOLMAN, BTP CTMS), landscape coordination, and release cycles.
    • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, especially in complex, distributed integration environments.
    • Excellent communication skills with the ability to engage technical and non-technical stakeholders.
    • Preferred skills: SAP Build Work Zone, SAP Build Process Automation, SAPUI5/Fiori.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent combination of education, training and/or relevant experience. 
  • Plus 8 years of relevant work experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Excellent documentation and communication skills.
  • Ability to articulate complex architectures in actionable terms.
  • Experience with Agile methodologies (SCRUM, SAFE) and multiple programming languages.
  • Ability to work under deadlines, multitask, and adapt to changing environments.
