Background information

EUV optics is the heart of the ASML scanner. It consists of complex multilayer mirrors reflecting and focusing extreme ultraviolet light (EUV). These mirrors operate in extremely aggressive environment of high-energy radiation and EUV-induced plasma. Optics Lifetime group, part of the Machine Conditioning cluster, aims to achieve optimal and reliable performance of EUV systems by predicting and securing EUV optics lifetime through contamination control and prevention of optical degradation. Within the group, Optics Lifetime Testing team is developing highly sophisticated test equipment and performs accelerated testing of optical surfaces in the controlled environment. 

Your assignment 

Within Optics Lifetime Testing team you will have an opportunity to develop new tools and methods for analysis of time-resolved ellipsometry data acquired during accelerated lifetime testing of EUV optics. The developed methodology will be applied to existing experimental datasets and will serve as an input for experimental design of future derisking strategies. The ultimate goal lies in quantitative assessment of impact of relevant stressors (e.g., EUV intensity, flux of plasma species, temperature) on degradation behaviour of EUV optics. You will be a part of a multidisciplinary team experienced in plasma-material interaction, fluid dynamics simulations and mechanical design. You will also interact with teams responsible for monitoring, predicting and preventing mirror degradation of scanner optics in field systems.

Expected activities include but are not limited to:

  • Development of methods and tools for ellipsometry data analysis using MATLAB and/or Python

  • Apply developed methodology for analysis of existing experimental data

  • Investigate impact of individual stressors on kinetics of coating degradation

  • Presentation of results and participation in technical discussions 

  • (Optional) taking part in experiments performed on a unique EUV setup located in the cleanroom of ASML

During the assignment a student will learn how to apply MATLAB/Python programming skills for data analysis to explain experimental observations.

Your Profile

To be a perfect match for this internship, you:

  • Are a graduating Bachelor or Master student in Chemistry, Applied Physics, Material Science, Mathematics, Programming, Data Analysis or a related field.

  • (Ideally) have a background in physics/chemistry/material science.

  • Have experience in programming and data analysis (Python and/or MATLAB) and basic knowledge of plasma and gas-solid interactions (nice-to-have).

  • Are motivated to learn, have strong analytical skills, are flexible and collaborative.

  • Have great communication skills and are fluent in English both verbally and in writing.

​This is a graduating Bachelor or Master apprentice internship with a duration of a minimum of 6 months, for 4-5 days a week, starting as soon as possible.

Please note that we can only consider students who are enrolled at an educational institution for the entire duration of the internship.
