About the Position:

The City of Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) is seeking dependable, safety-focused Striper Operators to join our Maintenance Operations team. Striper Operators play a key role in keeping Portland’s streets safe and accessible by operating large truck-mounted paint equipment to apply long-line striping throughout the city.

This is an excellent opportunity for skilled equipment operators who want to make a positive impact on the community. Candidates with relevant experience will be required to demonstrate their abilities through a comprehensive skills test using a 2025 cab-over Peterbilt single-axle truck with rear drop and a mid-mounted commercial road-paint application carriage. This test confirms the technical skills and aptitude needed for success in the role.

What you’ll get to do:

  • Safely operate and maintain large, complex striper trucks to apply high-reflectivity paint on City-maintained streets.
  • Perform daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections, perform minor maintenance, and document and report needed repairs to City fleet.
  • Use closed circuit video systems and pointers to accurately apply striping patterns.
  • Communicate effectively with striping team members using a headset.
  • Follow striping layout markings, recognize potential issues and may review and interpret work orders and basic engineering plans to determine designated placement of striping.
  • Prepare paint material and load onto truck.
  • Ensure work quality and safety of crew members working in conjunction with the striper.
  • Maintain professional relationships with coworkers, the community, and other skilled personnel.
  • Respond appropriately to questions/concerns from other employees and the community, at times in difficult circumstances, and elevating concerns to leadership in a timely manner.
  • Respond to emergencies, including weather-related and hazard cleanups.
