POSITION OVERVIEW

JOB SUMMARY:

The incumbent performs journey level tasks in surface preparation finishing and painting. This person may also be asked to assist other trades as needed in the field of Carpentry, Electrical, Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, Refrigeration, Plumbing, and Locksmith duties. These duties include installation, inspection, maintenance, repair or replacement of machinery, mechanical equipment, piping, electrical and plumbing systems, carpentry, and locksmith-related tasks. The following list of specific statements of duties does not preclude management from assigning such duties if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position. Work assignments will come from work orders, blueprints, drawings, crude sketches, and verbal or written instructions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

A High School Diploma and four years of Painting experience or completion of an approved apprenticeship program. Approved vocational/technical training may substitute at equivalent rate for the required experience.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

The incumbent must possess the knowledge and ability to read and understand construction drawings, blueprints, and specifications and local, state, and federal codes and regulations. Understand and consistently apply internal department standard operating procedures and University polices.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Four years of experience in the painting field to include the installation and finishing of drywall.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/JOB DUTIES:
  • 85% - The incumbent is responsible for the interior and exterior finishes for the University buildings and campus area. The basic purpose of this work is to maintain, decorate and protect wood, metal, plaster and other surfaces by applying paints, varnish and/or stains. • Apply paints, varnishes, and/or stains to all types of surfaces (e.g. wood, metal, plaster, etc.) to protect and beautify such surfaces using appropriate utensils and equipment. • Select types and colors of paint, varnish or stain; mix, blend and prepare paints for proper color match. • The incumbent uses ladders, scaffolding and lifts as required to gain access to areas needing to perform related work. • Prepares surfaces for painting using appropriate tools, equipment and techniques to include but not limited to gypsum board, wood siding, concrete, etc. • Confers with supervisors and department heads regarding the scheduling of work, the handling of emergencies and the feasibility of painting equipment and materials in the area to ensure that needs of the University are met expeditiously and at a convenient time. • Remove and Replace caulking on windows, doors, around cabinets, etc. • Install, repair, and finish of gypsum board and wallpaper. • Stenciling where required either with spray gun or brush. • Painting of parking spaces and roadways as needed. • Removes graffiti from floors, walls, and ceilings etc. • Cleans exterior surfaces with power washing equipment. • The incumbent performs a variety of preventive maintenance inspections to identify any damage of deterioration which has occurred since last inspection. Document inspection results and submit those findings, along with recommendations for corrective actions, to their immediate supervisor. - (Essential)
  • 15% - The incumbent will be asked to assist other trades or perform other duties as determined by Supervision. Maintain job site and shop area in an orderly, clean, and safe condition. Prepare material estimates for work to be performed, using as a basis, construction best standards, drawings, blueprints, sketches, and written or verbal instructions. Communicate with the requestors for status and scheduling of work orders. Record time and material expended on work order forms. - (Essential)
