Director of Taxation[JP1] 

Summary:

We are seeking a detail-oriented and organized Director of Taxation that will lead all aspects of the company’s tax strategy, compliance, planning, and risk management.  This role focuses on indirect tax, including sales and use tax, excise, property (real estate and personal property), gross receipts, and other transaction-based taxes. This management-level role will join the finance leadership team at a leading private-equity backed national infrastructure services company, and report directly to the CFO.

Key Responsibilities:

Indirect Tax Strategy & Planning

  • Develop and execute a comprehensive indirect tax strategy covering sales/use, excise, and property taxes across numerous U.S. jurisdictions across 6 operating companies.
  • Evaluate and optimize tax treatment of internal labor, subcontractors, and materials (e.g., fiber, conduit, towers, network equipment) used in telecom infrastructure projects.
  • Advise operations, sales and engineering teams on tax implications of project scoping, procurement, and contracting structures.
  • Ensure accurate application of construction vs. installation tax rules and identify exemption opportunities for telecom projects.

Compliance & Reporting

  • Oversee preparation and filing of sales/use, property, and related tax returns in all applicable jurisdictions.
  • Maintain compliance with multi-state nexus standards, ensuring timely registration and reporting as new projects open in new states.
  • Manage tax exemption certificates, resale certificates, and direct pay permits, ensuring documentation integrity and audit readiness.
  • Review U.S. federal income tax returns and associated state tax returns for all corporate entities.
  • Implement and maintain tax automation tools and systems to improve accuracy and efficiency of indirect tax compliance.
  • Coordinate with external advisors and state authorities during audits, inquiries, or refund claims.

Audit, Risk, & Controls

  • Lead state and local tax audits, defending positions on materials classification, project sourcing, and installation vs. resale treatment, utilizing external tax advisors as required.
  • Conduct internal reviews to identify potential exposure or overpayment and pursue refund or credit opportunities.
