The Manager of Direct Commodities is responsible for directing and guiding the activities of the direct sourcing team by aligning short and longer-term commodity strategies and ensuring alignment with the global team and assigned business units. 

 

The individual will partner with product development and business unit engineering teams to provide materials and components for company product manufacturing. They will develop systems and procedures for selecting and monitoring vendors and suppliers to ensure their ability to meet engineering and quality standards and that parts and materials received meet requirements in a cost-effective manner. This position establishes requirements for suppliers to achieve process and quality standards for GMPs. This position is also responsible for meeting scope, schedule, and cost objectives for NPD (New Product Development) Projects and Programs.

 

What you will be doing:

  • Monitors parts from acquisition through the manufacturing cycle and communicates and resolves supplier-related problems as they occur
  • Develops and prioritizes an auditing schedule to ensure that designated suppliers are audited on a regular basis to ensure good manufacturing practices and quality standards are met
  • Coordinates purchasing activities with manufacturing, planning and engineering departments to acquire inventory in a cost-effective and timely manner
  • Processes purchase requisitions, purchase change orders, and requests for quotes to suppliers
  • Responsible for procurement business system data input and integrity; creates and maintains bills of material and parts/commodities numbers in supply chain management or other enterprise-wide systems
  • Participates in maximizing the procurement teams' changes, part parameters; quote table maintenance, supplier database information, error report analysis, and part number/supplier code information
  • Performs cost analysis and volume planning for major commodities (e.g., materials, components, equipment and services)
  • Conducts supplier facility surveys of potential critical components providers  
  • Evaluates suppliers’ internal functions to assess their overall performance and provides feedback in assessment of their operation
  • Qualifies suppliers according to company standards and may administer a Certified Supplier Program in receiving inspection to ensure cost-effectiveness
  • Reviews and analyzes purchase requisitions
  • Develops new supply sources where vendors and suppliers are no longer competitive.
  • Will recommend cost-saving proposals including make-versus-buy analysis or alternative sourcing
  • Interacts closely with suppliers and QA to resolve quality issues
  • Works with management to address all aspects of commodity management, including procurement support, commodity business plans, market trends assessment, pricing, and product availability
  • Monitors the cost, schedule and scope of assigned subcontracts to negotiate highest quality at best value
  • Monitor market conditions and trends, technology roadmaps, and identify supply & demand challenges
  • Communicates product specifications to suppliers and assesses supplier’s ability to meet engineering and quality requirements 
  • Management of labor planning, budget and capacity requirements; foster good communication with cross functional teams including production, quality, supply chain, and sourcing based on production scheduling
  • Foster good communication and teamwork within plant environment to meet and execute on schedules
  • Ensure manufacturing procedures are followed and quality standards are maintained through leadership of supervisors and leads
  • Provide input into production forecasting
  • Supporting and champion of continuous improvement to maintain a safe work environment and regulatory requirements
