The Mechanic, Maintenance I is the core hourly industrial maintenance craft position within the Maintenance department and serves as the primary job profile for general hourly maintenance personnel.  The role is responsible for performing preventive, corrective, and emergency maintenance on manufacturing equipment across the facility. This position aligns with the skill expectations of an industrial maintenance mechanic craft, including working knowledge of mechanical systems, rotating equipment, material handling equipment, utilities, rigging, lubrication, equipment repair, and related plant maintenance practices.

 

This position is a member of the Maintenance organization, reports directly to the Maintenance Supervisor, and may be assigned to either the rotating 12-hour shift maintenance team supporting 24/7 production calls or the Monday through Friday day maintenance team supporting planned maintenance, scheduled outages, inspections, repairs, and equipment rebuilds.  The role supports a continuous manufacturing operation and may be required to support days, nights, weekends, holidays, overtime, planned outages, emergency repairs, and call-in work based on business needs.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Comply with all company standards, GMPs, food safety requirements, OSHA regulations, lockout/tagout, PPE, confined space, hot work, working at heights, lifting and rigging, safe work permitting, environmental, and site work-control procedures.
  • Perform on plant assets and utility equipment routine field and shop repairs, including mechanical adjustments, component replacement, and lubrication.
  • Respond quickly to equipment breakdowns and production-related maintenance issues to safely restore equipment operation.
  • Support planned maintenance, scheduled outages, daily work requests, emergency repairs, equipment inspections, and follow-up corrective actions in a timely and reliable manner.
  • Demonstrate mechanical troubleshooting and problem-solving skills across a broad range of plant equipment.
  • Inspect, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain mechanical equipment including pumps, gear reducers, bearings, seals, couplings, chain drives, belt drives, conveyors, blowers, compressors, valves, and related components.
  • Communicate effectively with production, maintenance, planning, reliability, engineering, electrical, and controls personnel to coordinate work and repair status.
  • Operate powered industrial equipment as qualified, including forklifts, pallet trucks, lifts, utility vehicles, and similar equipment.
  • Identify worn, damaged, obsolete, missing, or misapplied components and support spare parts inventory process and accuracy.
  • Support spare parts identification, PM improvement, repair planning, and follow-up work needed to reduce repeat failures.
  • Document work performed, inspection findings, parts used, equipment condition, and follow-up recommendations in the CMMS.
  • Maintain tools, shop equipment, work areas, and assigned job sites in a clean, organized, and safe condition.
  • Support work outside primary focus areas as business needs require.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Education & Qualifcations:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
  • At least three (3) years of verifiable industrial maintenance experience in a manufacturing or similar industrial environment preferred.
  • Technical school, trade school, apprenticeship, military maintenance training, industrial maintenance mechanic training, or equivalent hands-on maintenance experience preferred.
  • Hands-on experience troubleshooting and repairing common industrial plant equipment, including pumps, conveyors, gear reducers, bearings, mechanical seals, couplings, blowers, compressors, pneumatic systems, hydraulic systems, valves, actuators, rotary valves/airlocks, and utility support equipment.
  • Proficient in the safe use of hand tools, power tools, shop tools, precision measuring tools, and maintenance equipment.
  • Welding, cutting, and light fabrication experience preferred.
