Senior Automation Engineer II

About the Role:

As the Senior Automation Engineer II, you will oversee operational and project support of PLC, DCS, Manufacturing Execution systems, and ancillary data systems used to control and collect data for multiple building and manufacturing unit operations. The main manufacturing systems include incubators, bioreactors, chromatography skids, filtration skids, media and buffer preparation vessels, intermediate totes, CIP and caustic distribution skids, COP washers, and autoclaves.

You will report to the Automation Lead.

How you will contribute:

  • Act as the primary contact and subject matter expert for control systems, supporting Manufacturing, Engineering, and Facilities groups.

  • Provide support and troubleshooting for front-line automation in manufacturing operations, rotating on-call for immediate assistance.

  • Maintain performance and compliance of automation systems (PLC, DCS, MES) to ensure 24/7 operations, accountable for system improvement and innovation.

  • Lead and manage automation projects, from design to execution, focusing on scope, quality, and strategic alignment with site priorities.

  • Develop and implement preventive maintenance strategies, ensuring system backups and security measures are in place.

  • Support compliance through audits and inspections; document deviations and corrective actions while engaging with regulatory agencies.

  • Perform complex data analysis to optimize equipment performance and project success, utilizing tools like PI Historian and PowerBI.

  • Create and manage documentation, including drawings and specifications, using tools such as COMOS and Veeva.

  • Collaborate with vendors to align on project requirements, technology advancements, and solution procurement.

  • Develop and maintain automated control systems and procedures, ensuring audit readiness and system lifecycle management.

What you bring to Takeda:

  • B.S./M.S. in Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Sciences, or equivalent degree and 8 + years of relevant industrial controls and cGMP Engineering experience and demonstrated accomplishments

  • Demonstrated experience configuring instrumentation and industrial control networking (Ethernet IP, Profibus, AS-I), as well as experience in PLC/DCS programming, Data Historian, and report configuration.

  • Expertise in at least one system: Allen Bradley, Siemens, Delta V, Schneider Electric, Johnson Controls, iFix, Factory Talk, Ignition SCADA, PI, IP21.

  • Knowledge in data integration (OPC, Kepware, Matrikon) and core engineering principles (process, plant, automation).

  • Familiar with facility design and Good Engineering Practice (GEP)

Important Considerations:

  • May be required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) and other clean room garments daily. This may include safety shoes, safety glasses, aprons, face shields, lab coats, full body gowns, hair nets and gloves and hearing protection.

  • Need to remove all make-up, jewelry, contact lenses, nail polish and/or artificial fingernails while in the manufacturing environment.

  • Work in a cold, wet environment.

  • Work multiple shifts, including weekends, or be asked to work supplemental hours, as necess
