Job Description
The Controlled Substance Technician supports the Pharmacist-in-Charge (PIC) in all aspects of controlled substance management, including ordering, receiving, recordkeeping, auditing, and dispensing. This role plays a key part in ensuring regulatory compliance and preventing diversion.
Primary responsibilities include conducting preliminary investigations into pharmacy-initiated controlled substance discrepancies or incidents and reporting findings to the PIC and the Controlled Substance Diversion Prevention Program (CSDPP). The technician reviews diversion prevention tracking software daily to identify pharmacy-related anomalies or concerns, escalating any issues to the PIC and CSDPP as needed. Additionally, the technician is responsible for the daily delivery of narcotics from the central pharmacy to automated dispensing machines, verifying the absence of any unexpected variances and promptly reporting discrepancies. The technician also contributes to staff education by identifying documentation gaps and providing targeted guidance to pharmacy, nursing, and provider teams.
The Controlled Substance Technician may be required to work in other department technician roles as assigned. In that capacity: assists a registered pharmacist with support activities and processes required to dispense medical prescriptions. Collects, inputs, and verifies prescription, refill, and patient information. Receives and stocks incoming supplies. Participates in sterile and nonsterile compounding processes. May prepare labels and routine prepacked orders. May be expected to perform some clerical duties relating to the department.
Education:
High School Diploma or GED equivalent required; College-level courses desirable but not required; Successful completion of a certified pharmacy technician training program preferred.
Experience:
Two or more years of experience in a hospital or health system preferred. Additionally, should include experience with handling and documentation of controlled substances in a pharmacy setting,
