Staff Associate I
Columbia University in the City of New YorkAbout the role
Description
SUMMARY: The goal of the research project is to build a computer disease simulation model for oral lesions and cancers, using a state-transition model (also known as Markov model). The position will entail applying model inputs from national datasets for incidence and mortality data as well as the literature, and overseeing development of the disease model in C or C (plus plus) . This position will require comprehension of basic epidemiologic and disease-related terminology, and some writing. The researcher will present updates and findings regularly through oral and written communication with the Principal Investigator. The position will last at least 2 years, with potential for longer. Open to some work conducted remotely.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Design and encode disease simulation model, working together with the Principal Investigator.
2. Understand the basic principles of diagnostic test accuracy measures and receiver-operating characteristic curves.
3. Regularly meet and communicate the status of the project, results, and finding.
4. Create database of results of analyses.
5. Participate in preparation of manuscripts and presentations as needed according to the results.
Qualifications
MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
Preferably, PhD in decision science, computer science, health economics, epidemiology, health services research, mathematics, or other quantitative field; or for those with research experience in a related field, other masters degrees may be considered.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
1. Familiarity with Markov models, monte carlo simulation, probability theory, decision analytic models
2. Ability to conduct literature searches using standard medical databases (e.g. pubmed/medline, embase)
3. Knowledge of statistics (at a minimum, multivariable regression and probability theory, and ideally with ability to perform time-to-event analysis) and basic epidemiology
4. Communication with medical students, faculty and/or staff in a team environment
5. Ability to communicate scientific concepts as described in the project summary, orally and in writing
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
Strong candidates for this position will have: 1) experience in decision analytic modeling or economic evaluation, 2) strong understanding of basic statistical analysis and ability to use a standard statistical package, 3) knowledge of basic epidemiology; 4) ability to conduct literature searches, and 5) strong organizational skills for data management, as well as excellent verbal and written communication skills.
