Job Summary
The City of Olathe is hiring a Fleet Maintenance Technician to join our Heavy Side team. This position is vital to maintaining the safety and reliability of City vehicles and equipment - helping keep services running smoothly across the community.
Heavy Side Focus
The Heavy Side team supports large, rugged commercial and specialized vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) over 10,000 pounds.
Heavy Side (Heavy-Duty Fleet & Specialized Equipment)
What it covers
Larger vehicles and mission-specific municipal equipment, such as:
Refuse trucks, dump trucks, street sweepers, snow plows
Fire apparatus (often serviced in-house or through a mix of vendors)
Large transit/shuttle buses (if applicable)
Sewer/vac trucks, hydrovacs
Construction equipment: backhoes, loaders, excavators
Some stationary equipment (generators, pumps) depending on the organization
Typical work performed
Heavy diesel diagnostics/repair, emissions-related work (as applicable)
Hydraulics, PTO systems, pumps, cylinders, hoses
Air brake systems, heavy suspensions, drivetrain work
Welding/fabrication, frame and body repair
Complex electrical, multiplex systems on modern vocational trucks
Crane/rigging-type lifts and removal of large components (engines/transmissions)
Shop setup / tools
Larger bays, heavy-duty lifts or in-ground systems, cranes/hoists
Specialized hydraulic tools, welders, torches, heavy presses
Technician Level Placement (I–IV)
This recruitment will be to fill a Technician I, II, III, or IV position. Starting level and pay will be based on verified experience and certifications.
Level Pay Range Minimum Required Certifications
I $21.75–$24.97 2 Years A/C refrigerant recovery and recycling certification
II $23.75–$26.95 3 Years A/C certification plus three certifications total: two ASE (Brakes and Suspension) plus one additional certification (ASE of choice or EVT F1/F2)
III $25.50–$29.72 6 Years A/C certification plus three ASE certifications total (two ASE in Brakes and Suspension plus one ASE of choice) and EVT F1/F2 + F3 + F4
IV $28.00–$33.20 10 Years A/C certification plus ASE Master Mechanic credentials and all required EVT training
Additional Requirements (All Levels)
High school diploma or equivalent, with coursework in automotive technology (trade school education preferred).
Valid State of Kansas driver’s license with a favorable driving record.
Ability to obtain a Kansas Class B CDL with air brake and tanker endorsements within six (6) months of hire.

Day Shift Schedule
Monday–Friday: 6:00 a.m.–2:30 p.m. or 7:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m.
