Occupational Summary:
The Associate Director of Operations, Marketing & Communications plays a crucial leadership role within the MarComms team at Duke University. This role is responsible for enhancing operational efficiency, managing key projects, implementing and management of the new project manager tool as well as supporting the AVP on special projects, new protocols, processes and internal communications. The Associate Director will oversee the Communications Project Manager and Coordinator, guiding them to ensure successful project execution and fostering a collaborative and communicative team environment. Additionally, the Associate Director will take a hands-on approach to managing complex projects that align with Duke University’s strategic goals, and will be a key leader in events management, promoting strong internal communications, stakeholder management, and team building.
Work Performed:
- Project and System Management (30%): Lead and manage key projects, including special projects in collaboration with the AVP. Oversee project management strategy and ensure alignment with university priorities. Manage vendor relationships and recommend system improvements.
- Operational Leadership (20%): Manage and streamline operational functions within the MarComms team, ensuring efficient processes and systems. Oversee the implementation and utilization of project management tools to enhance team performance.
- Team Management and Development (20%): Supervise the Communications Project Manager and Coordinator, including hiring, training, and professional development. Foster a collaborative and communicative team environment that supports strong internal communications and stakeholder management.
- Strategic Planning (10%): Partner with the AVP for Operations and Strategy to align operational activities with MarComms and university-wide strategic objectives.
- Budget Oversight (10%): Collaborate with senior colleagues to manage the budget, supporting communication campaigns and operational needs.
- Internal Communication (10%): Lead internal communications efforts, including monthly updates and other communications, ensuring clear and consistent messaging across the team.
Required Qualifications:
- Education/Training: Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Communications, or a related field; Master’s preferred.
- Experience: 7-10 years in operations and project management, preferably within a marketing or communications environment.
- Skills: Strong organizational, communication, project management, and team leadership abilities; experience with budget management and strategic planning.
Minimum Qualifications
Education
Bachelor's Degree required. Work requires strong communications, preferred. analytical, organizational and business skills normally acquired through completion of an advanced degree in a related field. Masters or J.D.
Experience
Work requires a minimum of seven years of demonstrated experience in a combination of administrative management, financial and strategic planning, and knowledge of educational principles, curriculum development and instructional design.
