About the opportunity

The primary purpose of this role is to lead the provision of sector leading Occupational Hygiene processes to manage the identification, measurement and evaluation of hazards across University operations to limit health risks through practical and cost-effective methods. The role develops and maintains management system documentation, including performance standards, associated guidance documentation and audit tools in compliance with the Work Health and Safety Regulations and relevant Codes of Practice.

The Senior Specialist will work closely with the Health and Safety Senior Manager Technical Projects and the Manager, Environmental Risk to proactively identify common sources of hazards, and develop risk management strategies aimed at creating health-supportive environments.

Responsibilities in this role include:

  • providing expert health and safety advice and guidance in Occupational hygiene to management and workers
  • contribute to and develop a risk based approach to control the risks associated with occupational hygiene
  • provide expert advice and conduct diagnostic and monitoring testing where appropriate in response to identified occupational hygiene hazards
  • undertake risk assessment, inspections, audits, and problem-solving activities and provide specialist advice to clients
  • uplift the capability, performance and compliance of the University’s obligations in occupational hygiene
  • design and deliver face to face training sessions on relevant safety topics
  • provide expert safety advice and guidance to Faculties, University Schools, Core Research, MDIs, and Central Unit Portfolios to enable the identification and execution of their H&S goals and objectives
  • support the ongoing review of clients’ health and safety practices and develop recommendations and plans to achieve continuous improvement and compliance with best practice and standards
  • build and sustain a positive/proactive safety culture and ensure the visibility of occupational hygiene in health and safety as a critical risk
  • support leaders and provide coaching and mentoring to build health and safety skills and leadership

About you:

  • certified occupational hygienist with experience in a commercial setting with competing priorities
  • demonstrated practical experience in applying specialist occupational hygiene strategies in complex scientific or medical laboratory-based research environments
  • high level communication, stakeholder engagement and influencing skills
  • practical hands on experience with direct reading instruments, sampling techniques and other methods of measurement
  • scientific qualifications would be highly desirable
  • demonstrated experience in developing an effective and sustainable safety culture of conceptualising, developing, and implementing practical compliance and safety programs
  • experience in providing expert safety advice with a demonstrated understanding of relevant legislation, Australian standards, and guidelines
  • knowledge of Risk Management practices and the application of government legislation.

Australian Temporary Residents currently employed at the University of Sydney may be considered for a fixed term contract for the length of their visa, depending on the requirements of the hiring area and the position.
