About the role

Description

The Brown University School of Public Health invites applications for an Associate or Full Professor position, with tenure, focused on studying information integrity and public trust in health and science, including the effects of misleading and false information and the development and evaluation of strategies to mitigate the impact of low-quality information. Though flexible, the expected start date is July 1, 2025.

The Brown University School of Public Health is home to four academic departments; 14 research centers dedicated to critical areas such as pandemic preparedness, aging, environmental health, and substance use; and a growing number of research labs and collectives, all linked under one mission: to improve the health of all populations, especially those most vulnerable, by producing world-class public health scholarship, forging strong community partnerships, and educating the next generation of diverse public health leaders. Brown’s ethos is deeply collaborative in nature. Through partnerships across campus and in the Providence community, the School fosters innovation, collaboration, and interdisciplinary exchange, leading to comprehensive and impactful public health interventions.

The successful candidate will assume a leadership role within the Information Futures Lab (IFL) and the home department of the candidate will depend on the candidate’s background and preferences. Founded in 2022, the IFL at Brown University’s School of Public Health is a new type of university hub where interdisciplinary researchers work collaboratively with journalists, civic society leaders, public servants, and other sources of trusted information to respond to the information crisis as a public health threat and to improve information ecosystems. IFL is focused on understanding information as a social determinant of health and generating evidence that builds information integrity in a way that allows people to effectively access, create, and make sense of information that is crucial to their health and wellbeing.

Qualifications

Applicants must have a doctoral degree (PhD, MD, or equivalent) and training and experience in psychology, communication, epidemiology, political science, economics, digital humanities, and/or a related discipline, with strong evidence of rigorous extramurally-funded research, teaching and mentorship, and other scholarly activity. The successful candidate will have experience researching the communications and information ecosystem surrounding critical public health topics of our time – such as the health impact of a changing climate, the drivers of trust in health information in vulnerable communities, or the impact of generative AI on individual and collective sensemaking.

Application Instructions

Interested applicants should submit a letter of application and updated curriculum vitae through Interfolio. We are especially interested in qualified candidates who can contribute, through their research, teaching, and/or service, to the diversity and excellence of the academic community.

Review of applications will begin on October 1, 2024. Full consideration will be given to all applications received by that date. Applications received after the priority deadline may be reviewed until the position is filled or the search is closed.

Application questions should be addressed to the Office of Faculty Affairs in the School of Public Health at sphfa@brown.edu.
