DOD SkillBridge Internship - Network and Security Engineer

The Network and Security Engineer is responsible for designing, implementing, and managing secure and scalable network infrastructures. This includes enterprise-level firewall configuration using pfSense, managing Dell networking switches, deploying and maintaining data center networking infrastructure, and integrating emerging 5G cellular technologies into enterprise environments.

The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience in both traditional networking, data center practices, with a strong focus on security, performance optimization, and network integration.

Job Responsibilities:

• Design and deploy secure enterprise networks using pfSense firewall and VPN solutions.
• Configure VLANs, trunking, LAG/LACP, and inter-VLAN routing on Dell switches.
• Monitor and troubleshoot switching hardware including Dell N-Series, S-Series, and OS10 environments.
• Plan, build, and maintain data center network architectures (spine-leaf, VLT, fabric automation).
• Integrate and secure network infrastructure in virtualization platforms.
• Participate in on-the-job shadowing for network deployments and real-world troubleshooting.
• Understand and contribute to 5G network integration including 5G NR, slicing, and enterprise use cases.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams for infrastructure planning and optimization.
• Document network designs, procedures, and best practices.

Requirements

• Strong understanding of TCP/IP, subnetting, routing, switching, VLANs, and NAT
• Hands-on experience with pfSense firewall setup, VPN configuration, and HA
• Proficiency in Dell switch CLI (OS6/OS10), VLANs, LAGs, and STP
• Experience with data center networking: spine-leaf topologies, VLT, SmartFabric
• Knowledge of virtualization platforms (VMware, Proxmox) and integration with networks
• Understanding of 5G cellular architecture, NR, and edge computing concepts
• Familiarity with network security principles, IDS/IPS (Snort/pfBlockerNG), and segmentation
• Basic automation and scripting (desirable but not required)
• Excellent documentation and communication skills

Certifications (Preferred/Targeted):

• CompTIA Network+ / Security+ (required for customer network access of admin)
• pfSense Certified (or equivalent firewall knowledge)
• Dell Networking Foundations (DNF) or N-Series/S-Series track (or CCNA and higher)
• 5G Fundamentals / 5G NR Introduction (e.g., from IEEE, Nokia, or Coursera)
