The Role
Researches, plans, designs and develops mechanical products and systems such as instruments, controls, robots, engines, machines and mechanical, thermal hydraulic or heat transfer systems for production, transmission, measurement, and use of energy. Applies research to the planning, design, development, and testing of mechanical and/or electromechanical systems, instruments, controls, engines, and/or machines.
The selected candidate will be expected to function as either an R&D Program Lead and/or R&D Project Lead for work areas within the organization. In either capacity the candidate will represent the organization as the prime technical and / or R&D program contact within our organization. May coordinate interdepartmental and / or external research efforts and/or project management activities. Responsible for project execution including project plans, communication, internal/external customer briefings, technical reviews, tests plan development and various other R&D related activities. The job will require the ability to perform both project management activities as well as perform or review technical products and / or deliverables. Additionally, technology development and research in various emergent fields is expected.
Must Have
Bachelor's Degree and 5 years of relevant exempt experience;
Master’s Degree and 3 years of relevant professional experience;
Ph.D. and 0 years of experience.
Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.
Nice to Have
The ideal candidate will also possess the following preferred skills:
• Practical experience in production areas supporting CVNs, VCS or CLB
• Engineering knowledge gained attained through either new construction engineering (Carrier and / submarine) and / or overhaul engineering (Carrier and /or Submarine). Facilities engineering experience may also be considered
• Waterfront engineering and / or waterfront experience is beneficial
• Good verbal and written communication skills to clearly present technical approaches and findings
• Demonstrated technical capability and the ability to work in team environment with craftsmen, individual contributors and leadership.
• Demonstrated ability to brief upper management both internal and external to NNS (Office of Naval Research / Carrier / Sub PEO’s / Technical Warrant Holders (TWH). Expectation that research will be presented at external technical conferences.
• Demonstrated project management experience gained through practical and/or academic experience
• Travel is expected. This may include conferences, briefs to Navy personnel, and shop / ship environment. Ability to support travel on emergent basis is desired (10 – 25%)
• The ability to perform technical work and / or project execution of emerging technologies, process development, test plan development R&D, materials analysis, technical scouting, and/or complete technical analyses are anticipated
• Professional engineering licensure and/or master’s degree in technical field (ME, Marine engineering, management degrees with applicable bachelor education/ work experience may also be considered.
