Staff Accountant, Affordable Housing

NAYA Family Center is seeking a Staff Accountant to manage the financial health of our organization and its affordable housing properties. Reporting to the CFO, this role ensures accurate, GAAP-compliant financial reporting while maintaining ownership of assigned properties, conducting budget variance analysis, and supporting grants accounting. This is a highly analytical and detail-oriented position that requires a strong understanding of accrual accounting, excellent communication skills, and the ability to collaborate across teams.

This is a full-time role with work hours of 9 am to 6 pm with a one-hour unpaid lunch. Some evening and weekend work may be required based on project needs. Once training and onboarding are complete, there may be flexibility to work from home 1-2 day a week.  

The salary for this position is $70,000 (or commensurate with experience) annually.

Who You Are

• You have 2-4 years of accounting or finance experience, preferably in nonprofit or affordable housing accounting.
• You hold a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration (or equivalent experience) and understand GAAP principles, revenue recognition, and fund accounting.
• You can interpret financial data, analyze budget variances, and prepare reports with accuracy and clarity.
• You identify opportunities for process improvements while maintaining financial accuracy.
• You are proficient in Excel, financial databases, and accounting software (experience with Sage Intacct is a plus).
• You understand the financial complexities of federal, state, and local grants and are passionate about supporting community development and affordable housing initiatives.
• You are adaptable, flexible, and able to manage changing priorities without compromising the quality of your work.
• You demonstrate self-awareness, listening deeply, centering others, and taking accountability for your actions.
• You are consistently punctual, reliable, and dependable in support of your team and clients.
• You possess a current Oregon or Washington driver’s license, and the ability to be insured under NAYA’s liability insurance policy (i.e. no more than one major driving violation in the last three years).

What You'll Do

• Produce accurate, timely monthly financial statements and dashboards for NAYA and its affordable housing portfolio.
• Manage accounting for NAYA-owned and third-party managed properties, including reconciliations, budget variance analysis, and cash forecasting.
• Support grants accounting functions related to community development and affordable housing initiatives, ensuring compliance with funding requirements.
• Assist in developing annual budgets for the organization, contracts, and grants.
• Prepare financial documents for year-end audits and external reporting.
• Identify opportunities to streamline the monthly close process while ensuring financial accuracy.
• Work closely with Asset Managers, third-party property management companies, and program teams to ensure alignment with financial goals.
