About the role

Job Description Summary

The purpose of this position is to support ongoing research in the Pearsall lab, especially that involving animal work and lab support duties. This
includes performing animal procedures and experiments, maintaining animal colonies, and maintaining records of animal use with the IACUC. The Research
Specialist will also perform bench experiments and imaging to analyze animal samples or support other lab staff’s studies as needed. Research Specialist will be
expected to analyze data, perform statistical analyses, and put experimental findings into context with the literature.
Knowledge, skills, and abilities needed upon job entry: A BS in life sciences or at least two (2) years of experience as a research specialist are needed to apply.
Successful applicants will be highly skilled in animal work, including colony maintenance, experimental procedures, live animal imaging, histology, and microscopy.
Guidelines and supervision employee will receive in order to perform duties, including the employee’s independence and discretion: Employee is expected to
design and conduct experiments independently. However, employee will receive daily supervision from the PI with weekly meetings to evaluate progress and
discuss upcoming experiments.

MUSC Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

A high school diploma and two years work experience in a clinical or research setting; a bachelor's degree in chemistry, biology, or other natural, life or health care science may be substituted for the two years of required experience.

Preferred Experience:
Successful applicants will be highly skilled in animal work, including colony maintenance, experimental procedures, live animal imaging, histology, and microscopy.

Job Duties:

30%-Maintain animal colonies, including breeding and genotyping, and records of animal use with the IACUC.

30%-Collect tissues to conduct analyses including but not limited to histology and subsequent imaging, RT-PCR and ELISA.

20%-Organize and analyze results of physiological, biochemical and molecular measurements with computer software (specialized imaging software, Excel, Prism,
Flowjo, and others), and write up experimental findings.

20%-Contribute to lab organizational tasks. These include item inventory and organization, sample inventory and organization, and placing orders.

(Infrequent) Ability to work in temperature extremes (32° F to 100° F) when required due to assignments in cold rooms and/or foreign countries.
