The successful candidate will conduct experiments to grow and analyze rubber producing plants in the field, greenhouse and hydroponic systems. Specific duties include: grow rubber producing plants in the field, greenhouse and hydroponic systems, select high performance plants, collect, clean, stratify and store seed; test seed priming systems to maximize germination rates; test ABA analogs to reduce seed dormancy; develop NIR models to quantify
rubber concentration and water content in living plants and in dried ground samples; induce polyploidy in diploid rubber producing plants. Other duties include acquisition, organization, and storage of data in Microsoft Office and other, platform-specific software; data analysis and interpretation; writing of weekly work and data summaries; writing of data reports; and
generation of data figures. Additionally, the position requires participation in team-based research, and attendance at weekly project meetings.


Detailed Job Description:

  • Analysis of analyte concentrations in rubber-producing plants in various experiments using established
  • gravimetric methods, collection of NIR spectra, and development of NIR quantification models for living plants and
  • dried ground samples.
  • Induction and analysis of polyploid rubber producing plants.
  • Experiments on seed priming, and imposition of stresses to improve rubber and latex yields.
  • Data analysis and report writing: acquisition, organization, and storage of data in Microsoft Office and other,
  • platform-specific software; data analysis and interpretation; writing of weekly work and data summaries; writing of data
  • reports; and generation of data figures.
  • Planting and maintenance of living plants.
  • Project management: attendance at weekly project meetings.

Minimum education required:

Bachelor's degree in agricultural or plant sciences.


Additional education desired:

Master of Science degree in agricultural or plant sciences.


Required experience:

Successful applicant must have experience in maintaining living plants, data collection, lab based analytical methods, and preparation of extraction or growth solutions made to established recipes. Additionally, the successful candidate will have experience analyzing data, writing scientific reports, and participating in team-based research. Excellent communication skills are essential to the position. 2 years of relevant experience.


Desired experience:

Experience in hydroponic systems.


Position will be based at the U.S. Arid Land Agricultural Research Center, Maricopa, AZ
