About the role

The Azure Hardware Systems & Infrastructure team is seeking an experienced Principal Computer Architect, Performance and Workload Focus to help architect compute and AI platforms for Microsoft Cloud. Our team operates at the intersection of CPU SoC and systems architecture, workload understanding and performance characterization, and benchmark development. We are a cross-discipline team of highly capable and motivated people with a collaborative and inclusive culture.

 

Responsibilities for this role include leading CPU and AI hardware architectural and microarchitectural pathfinding and requirements gathering with customers and users. Working with partner teams and organizations to model and architect novel processors, system-on-chips, accelerators, and datacenter systems, and analyzing workload performance on existing systems.

Responsibilities

You’ll collaborate and drive efforts across multiple engineering groups (business units) within Microsoft and external technology providers and organizations; success will be achieved by collaborating with cross-functional teams to meet or exceeding business unit requirements with technical solutions, as well as developing and putting in place processes and methods that bring about efficient collaboration and decision making within Microsoft and Azure:

  •  Be the trusted partner and technical leader in the areas of computer architecture optimized for Microsoft Cloud first party services, workload analysis and benchmark development, and other related areas.
  • Collaborate closely with other key software and hardware architects on architectural pathfinding, definition of system/hardware architectural specifications.
  • Performance estimation and modeling of cloud workloads on datacenter scale systems
  • Initiate, scope and undertake projects with multiple external partners and stakeholders.
  • Drive principled, major technical decisions
  • Create and maintain best practices for high quality product engineering, development best practices and conduct architectural reviews.

Qualifications

Required/Minimum Qualifications

  • 10+ years of technical engineering development and/or research experience
    • OR Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 8+ years of technical engineering experience
    • OR Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 5+ years of technical engineering experience
    • OR Doctorate degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 4+ years of technical engineering experience.
  • 7+ years experience with computer architecture, performance analysis, workloads, and performance simulation.

Other Requirements: 

  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check. This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to understand and solve problems leveraging cross-stack optimizations spanning algorithms to silicon.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively in a large organization spanning multiple teams of hardware, software, and systems engineers and stakeholders.
  • Desire to collaborate, motivate, and contribute to a team of capable engineers.

Hardware Engineering IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $137,600 - $267,000 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $180,400 - $294,000 per year.
