JOB SUMMARY

The Registered Nurse-Acute functions as a vital member of the healthcare team by demonstrating a customer/patient focus, effective communication, professionalism and self-development, and teamwork. The individual utilizes the nursing process to assess, plan, implement and evaluate comprehensive care provided to selected patient populations and their families. The Registered Nurse - Acute is expected to demonstrate excellent clinical, problem-solving, interpersonal and leadership skills and make decisions consistent with hospital policies, department protocols/guidelines, and the Wisconsin Nurse Practice Act.

 

WORK SHIFT:

Variable Shifts including weekend and holiday rotations.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

 

EDUCATION

(For positions requiring education beyond a high school diploma or equivalent, educational qualifications must be from an institution whose accreditation is recognized by the Council for Higher Education and Accreditation.)
Required Education: Diploma or degree in nursing.

Preferred Education: Bachelor's degree in nursing.

 

EXPERIENCE

 

Preferred/Optional Experience: Experience in an acute care setting.

 

CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES

The following licensure(s), certification(s), registration(s), etc., are required for this position, which must be maintained in good standing:
Minimum Required: Current State of Wisconsin Registered Nurse License or Nurse Compact License. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification awarded by the American Heart Association (AHA) within three months of hire.

Registered Nurse-Acute

DEPARTMENT/UNIT DESCRIPTION

8 North is a 27-bed patient care unit within the department of Adult Medical Surgical Services. The unit provides inpatient nursing care to patients that are admitted with Oncology, Hematology, or Medical/ Surgical needs.

Services Provided/Patient Conditions:

This can include but is not limited to:

• Chemotherapy and Side effects from chemotherapy
• New diagnosis of Cancer and Blood disorders
• Autologous Stem cell transplants
• Chemoembolization
• GI bleeds and Hematology
• Observation for 48 hours of less, Examples: Chest pain, Abdominal pain, Asthma exacerbations,
• Any general medical conditions such as Congestive Heart Failure, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, Pneumonia, Failure to thrive
• Post-operative G-tubes or drains - generally related to cancer, but not always

Staffing Mix:

Patient care on 8 North is accomplished by 24/7 staffing through a combination of nursing personnel that include RN’s, and CNA’s.  Direct caregiver skill mix is determined each shift through established guidelines provided to the charge nurses by unit management. Fluctuations in daily staffing models may vary from shift to shift or day to day due to acuity of patients and availability of staff.

Additionally, Therapy Services are provided to patients through Physical, Occupational, and Respiratory Therapy services. Operational support is provided to the department from the Health Unit Coordinators and Decentralized Transport.

Patient Population:

There are cultural needs that are considered for our patients as well, those include Native Americans, Hmong, Amish/ Mennonite, and Hispanic patients who account for less than 1% each of our total patient population. Interpretive services are available for nursing staff as needed.
