Job Description
The Senior Associate will play a key role in making and managing direct infrastructure investments on a principal basis. The individual will work with and assist the wider team in evaluating infrastructure investment opportunities, with a focus on North America, but also global opportunities, conducting research, developing recommendations, participating in the execution of investments and monitoring, and managing investments.
Team Description
CPP Investments’ Infrastructure division directly invests in large-scale assets that provide defensive long-term returns, substantial inflation protection and possess minimal substitution risks. The division typically targets investments in regulated utilities, transportation, telecommunication, datacenters and energy sectors with an equity investment size from $500 million up to several billion dollars. The division completed its first active investment in 2006, currently possesses more than 30 direct investments valued at approximately $60 billion and employs over 50 professionals across 6 global offices.
Accountabilities:
Evaluate investment opportunities and key sector themes:
- Research and analyze a variety of infrastructure investment opportunities
- Perform due diligence on opportunities including past and projected financial performance, quality of management teams, investment merits and risks, regulatory environment, industry dynamics and other relevant factors
- Build dynamic financial models to evaluate opportunities including testing assumptions and sensitivities, evaluating expected returns and generating valuation recommendations
- Meet with company management team and review performance, strategy, outlook, and other relevant topics as required
- Assist in presenting investment recommendations to investment committees
Execute Infrastructure Investments:
- Assist with the overall execution of infrastructure investments including collaborating with management teams to drive performance
- Liaise with investment partners (other investors) and advisors (financial, legal, etc.)
Monitor Infrastructure Investments:
- Monitor ongoing financial and operational performance of infrastructure investments
- Identify and help implement performance improvement initiatives at portfolio companies
- Assist in performing valuation reviews
Build and Develop the Team:
- Participate in and contribute to weekly departmental meetings
- Share knowledge by collaborating among team members and across geographies
- Other relevant duties and projects as assigned
- Support and mentor junior members of the team, be able to troubleshoot issues / questions and to offer guidance and support.
Qualifications
- 5-7 years of experience in investment banking, private equity or consulting; experience in infrastructure investments/transactions is desirable
- Strong research, financial modelling, analytical and valuation skills
