About the role

The Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) is seeking multiple temporary Facility Monitors to work in our facilities to support programs and facility operations.  Facilities include all community centers and Arlington Public School Gymnasiums in which programs such as youth basketball, adult sport drop in, teen activities, and skate nights occur.  Additionally, facility monitors may have the opportunity to work at our community centers’ front desk operations.

  • Provide excellent customer service and information to customers via in-person, email, or phone;
  • Set up and break down rooms and gymnasiums for programs and events;
  • Respond to emergency situations and create incident reports, including assisting in the evacuation and/or the response of the facility during emergencies;
  • Submit and report game scores;
  • Use RecTrac to accept payments, process reservations, and help patrons with various registration and scheduling requests;
  • Process funds in compliance with the policies and procedures; 
  • Participate in staff meetings, in-service trainings and workshops, as required by the position; 
  • Share information and referrals about current DPR programs in Arlington County with customers; and
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

The successful candidate for this position will possess a solid understanding of recreational activities, demonstrate strong communication and problem-solving skills, proven ability to take initiative in assisting others, and adhere to all applicable policies and procedures. The ideal candidate will also be able to perform effectively under pressure, work independently when required, and be accountable for completing assigned tasks.

Minimum Requirement: High school diploma, vocational school, a GED certificate, or equivalent. 
Desirable: Preference may be given to candidates with experience in one or more of the following:

  • Administering recreational programs or facility monitoring;
  • Providing effective customer service; 
  • Processing and handling funds; and
  • Sport rule knowledge (e.g., basketball)

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Employees must possess or obtain within 60 days of hire the following certifications: Adult CPR, Child CPR, First Aid, and AED training.
  • A pre-employment criminal records check will be conducted.  It may include checks of the following: criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure, and credit history. You will be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information.  
  • The selected employee will be expected to use technology to complete routine daily tasks.
  • The selected employee will wear a uniform and must be capable of lifting up to 50 pounds. 
  • This position may require standing and walking for prolonged periods of time during the work shift. 

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

Work Hours:  This is a seasonal, temporary position requiring a minimum commitment of three months, from December through March, with the possibility of extension based on operational needs. The position will include a combination of part-time and full-time shifts, up to 40 hours weekly.  Work hours will vary and require flexible availability, including mornings, mid-days, afternoons, and evenings on both weekdays and weekends.

Work Location: Various Arlington Parks, Community and Fitness Centers, and/or Arlington Public School locations. 

The official title for this position is Facilities Assistant.
